Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, “History,” and the Other
http://clcwebjournal.lib.purdue.edu/clcweb99-4/totosy99-2.html
“In his article, “Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, ‘History,’ and the Other,” Steven Tötösy discusses the historical background of Michael Ondaatje’s novel, The English Patient (1992). … Tötösy argues that Ondaatje’s particularrendition of the notion of the Other provides venues for a specific understanding of the historical background of the novel (the “real” Almásy) as well as its fictional presentation (the “Almásy theme”). The article also responds to the pronouncedinterest in the novel’s and the film’s protagonist and his “real” history, evident internationally after the release of the film in 1996. “

The Other Questioned: Exoticism and Displacement in Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient
http://www.lib.unb.ca/Texts/IFR/bin/get.cgi?directory=Vol.27/&filename=Ty.htm
The paper’s author aims to “study the ways in which the novel and film of The English Patient question racial otherness and the concept of national identity. I argue that otherness is deliberately displaced through characterization, through ideologically disruptive images, through exotic scenery, and through structure.”
