Janet Hale was born in 1947, in Riverside, California. Growing up, she lived on the Couer d'Alene and Yakima reservations. She received her M.A. in English from UC Davis in 1984. More recently, she has taught at several colleges and universities as a writer-in-residence and visiting professor, including appointments as the Richard Thompson Lecturer at Iowa State U in Ames in 1986, the Claremont Lecturer at College of Illinois in Springfield in 1995, and the Visiting Professor of Native American Literataure at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1998.
