Alfonso Alex Ortiz was born in San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico. He received his B.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1961 and his M.A. and Ph.d. from the University of Chicago in 1963 and 1967, respectively. Ortiz’s career included assistant professor at Pitzer College, Claremont, California; professor, Princeton University, and professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico. Ortiz’s interests included contemporary Indian Affairs; religion and society; and oral tradition. He also edited Native American writings.
