Paquin is a member of the Sault Ste. Maire Chippewa tribe and grew up in northern Michigan. A troubled childhood, abusive parents and alcoholism landed Paquin in jail, where he first began to tell his story to fellow inmates. Eventually, Paquin married, had a family, and became an advocate for Native fishing rights on the Great Lakes.
