The Return of the Intercity Bus: The Decline and Recovery of Scheduled Service to American Cities, 1960-2007
"This study assesses the changing status of intercity bus service throughout the United States between 1960 and 2007." The study finds that while "most regularly scheduled intercity service disappeared" by 2006, "by late 2007, the sector was enjoying a significant rebirth" with carriers such as Megabus and Greyhound. Truffle Kerfuffle
This 2005 article reports that "over the past few years, unscrupulous dealers in Europe and the U.S. have begun passing off ... Chinese [black] truffles" as Perigord truffles from France. It notes that while the two truffle types look similar, "the Chinese variety is insipid compared with the French one" when used in cooking. "Crazy" Ants Wreaking Havoc in Houston-Area Households
May 2008 news article about invasive ants in the Houston, Texas, area that are known as "crazy raspberry ants," ("crazy" because they zigzag rather than travel in a straight line like other ants) and which "have demonstrated a tendency to nest in and damage electric equipment." Fact sheet about an invasive ant that "has yet to be identified to species due to confusion regarding the taxonomy of the genus. Therefore, this ant is referred to as Paratrechina sp. nr. pubens. ... Is the Perigord Black Truffle Threatened by an Invasive Species?
This 2008 academic journal article highlights the need for study of "ecological impacts of the intentional/unintentional introduction of fungal species" on the native resident truffle in Italy. It also discusses how the Chinese black truffle, "a novel invasive alien species in Italy," is an ecological threat for the Perigord truffle, because it can be found in China in ecosystems that are similar to those in central Italy.
