The following day Lorenzo takes Calogero to work with him on the bus and he sees his father as a good person as he was nice to everyone and was always neat and clean, his father later takes him to the pier and talks to him about baseball which at the time was everything to Calogero and tells him that he has talent and not to waste it cause “the saddest thing is wasted talent.”(). The young Calogero, not understanding that the money was illegal, argued with his father about how the money was his and pleaded with his father not to say anything to Sonny. Lorenzo then goes to talk to Sonny telling him to “stay away from my son” () before continuing the conversation they send Calogero outside who listens in on their argument which ends with Lorenzo throwing the money at him. After Lorenzo is sent out by Sonny, Calogero asks his father where his money is once again arguing the fact that the money is dirty Lorenzo then slaps Calogero which leads him to repeat after Sonny saying “Sonny was right, the working man is a sucker, dad.” () which leads to the argument of the morality of Sonny which Calogero doesn’t understand why his father dislikes sonny, and why he calls him evil asking his

The Bronx Bombers have also accomplished many feats that most other teams have not even reached yet. The narrator keeps in mind that he has an obligation to watch his brother but he tore apart by his emotions which are shifting from love to hate. The reason is, he is unable to accept fully that his brother can change as much as he cares about him. Since he was young, Sonny is haunted
In the meantime, eight years has passed and Calogero has grown in to a young man who has been visiting Sonny without his father permission or knowledge. Sonny is the narrator’s brother and the focus of the story. The narrator explains throughout the story that Sonny suffers from heroin and other drug addictions and the steps he takes to fight against those addictions. The narrator, who is Sonny's brother, experiences his own trauma as we later find out he struggles to cope with the loss of his daughter. This has made it hard for him to show emotion, even to his own family. Because of this lack of emotion, he ignores Sonny’s cries for help when it comes to drug addiction.
After his daughter's tragic death the narrator finally writes to his brother Sonny and the two develop a correspondence. When he is released, Sonny returns to Harlem to stay with the narrator. The narrator reminisces about the brothers' past. He recalls the promise he made to his mother to look after Sonny. He had kept this promise in mind when he returned for her funeral.
We get the story through the narrator's memories and outlook on life. Although still residing in Harlem, the narrator has opposed the status quo and lives a working middle class life as an algebra teacher with his wife and two children. He is constantly conscious of Harlem’s darker side, as his Brother Sonny’s life has been the polar opposite of his. Sonny is a passionate artist who loves the world of music and musicians. Sonny feel caged in Harlem so he flees to pursue his dreams but only ends up becoming addicted to heroin and soon after becomes incarcerated.
Sonny’s letter written to the narrator in response to the news of the narrator’s daughter dying serves an important role in the story by reestablishing the relationship between the brothers and giving the reader insight into the misery that Sonny felt as a result of his actions. It is revealed to the reader that before the narrator had written his letter to Sonny, that the two had not been on speaking terms for a long time. After hearing of the news, Sonny wrote the letter back to the narrator which formally began their newfound connection to each other. It is revealed within the letter Sonny’s reasoning’s behind his imprisonment as well as the sadness he felt within. Sonny describes himself as “trying to climb up out of some deep, real deep
He describes the childhood friend of Sonny as being “high and raggy” and smelling “funky,” and later a woman as having a “battered face” and being a “semi-whore” (68-69). These vivid character descriptions sharply contrast the strong lack of environmental descriptions found at the beginning of the story. These environmental descriptions are not yet found because Sonny has not yet come back to the city. Since the environment is used as a tool for describing the relationship between the brothers, it can not be described fully until the relationship is at play. As soon as the narrator is reunited with Sonny, he begins to fully describe his surroundings.
In contrast, the narrator internalizes his feelings by repressing them as his father did after his brother passed away. As it was the relationship of their father and uncle, Sonny and his brother grew up in Harlem, a district replete with hopelessness and poverty. Yet each individual reacts to his environment in unusual ways. On the one hand, the narrator distances himself from his community in Harlem, including his brother Sonny. The narrator may love his brother but is in general judgmental of the direction of Sonny's life struggles and decisions.
Every time the narrator attempted to control what his brother wanted to do in life, the more he lost power over his brother. Not only did he lose power he lost that deep connection one should have with their sibling. Sonny’s desire to not be powerless anymore gave him the determination to gain power which he could not handle. This lead him to lose all of that power once again. People when reading this should really consider how what they are doing to gain power is affecting others in theirs lives.
The theme of determination is really shown by the relationship between Sonny and his father. They are very different people with personalities that tend to clash. Sonny’s relationship with his father became distant when he was young, in part to his mother’s insistence. When his grandfather commented that he’s just like his father she responded by telling Sonny: “No, you’re not, you’re not.” She instilled in Sonny that he’s not like his father, which really affected Sonny and his dad’s relationship later on.
The narrator says that Sonny’s trouble became surreal when the narrator was put in the position of losing someone dear to
But through it all, they managed to remain close and get over their differences in order to build a stronger relationship. While the story was full of emotional ups and downs, there was a certain point that confirmed to the reader the solidity of their relationship. The story begins with the main character, Sonny’s older brother, talking about his and Sonny’s childhood. He puts an extra emphasis on Sonny’s downward spiral after their mother’s death.
