People face difficult challenges every day. But, hundreds of Kilometres deep into an untamed forest, Salva, in the novel “A Long Walk To Water” makes due, and survives the northern Sudanese attacks. With Salva’s determination, he manages to escape to the bush and starts his long walk to refuge. Salva’s immense courage helped him to survive, and his compassion allowed him to supply water to his enemies. It is this three traits-determination, courage and compassion that got him through the challenges he faced. Firstly his determination, with Salva’s determination, he manages to escape to the bush, and begin his long walk to refuge. At the beginning of the book ‘A Long Walk To Water’ Salva calmed himself down to focus, think and escape “Boom! Salva turned and looked. Behind him, a huge black cloud of smoke… Salva lowered his head and ran”(Park pg 8, 11) In addition, even after his best friend Marial passed he kept walking, and walking. Lowering his head, and thinking straight, shows his ability to calm himself down and persevere. …show more content…
Without his courage, he might have never joined the group, nor survived by not going out of the barn and talking to the old woman. “A woman sitting in the sun… He walked towards her”(Park pg 15, 16) he was delighted to find out she was friendly, but even more so, that he was no longer alone. Those are just a few ways Salva’s courage brought him that much closer to
The first factor that made survival possible for Salva in a long walk to water was how Salvas group could not Crose the Nile River, so they had to build a boat. Evidence from the text that shows how Salvas group built the boat is on page 44’’Salva and his group could not Cros the Nile River, so they had to build the boat
He didn't know if they were safe, or even alive and that caused a lot of turmoil and constant worry. However, Salva was also driven by the fact that he wanted to reunite with his loved ones urgently. This gave him strength and determination to endure all the difficulties during his journey. Lastly, being apart from his family allowed Salva to develop survival skills and become more self-sufficient. He learnt how to deal with unfamiliar situations and make important decisions all on his own.
“When they reached the bushes, Uncle pointed out a clump of rocks up ahead and told Salva to walk as far as the rocks. ”(Linda Sue Park, 54) Salva’s uncle didn’t let him stay behind and motivated him with small checkpoints to keep going through the heat of the desert. In addition, Salva thought it was impossible to make it through the desert yet he was able to make it to the end.
Uncle told him “A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this problem.” This helped Salva get through many many other obstacles as well. Another example happens later in the book when Uncle dies and the rest of the group starts treating Salva badly. Salva perseveres and manages to deal with the leftover scraps that they grudgingly give him.
The last peice of evidence is when he became friends with Marial. “Im Marial”,It was good to make a friend”(30) . This quote showes that Marial helped him get comfortoble. In conclusion, it was very clear that relationships with family and tribesmen helped him get through Salva hard
Salva also didn’t give up when he barely could move because of his lack of energy. Another point in the novel Salva made it to a camp that would take care of his needs (shelter, food, water, warmth, cloths). Years later he is forced to leave the camp and chased into the Gilo river. The Gilo river contains alligators, and the men who chased them were trying to shoot them with guns, there was also a large possibility that they could have drowned. You would have to be brave to jump into a river with alligators eating children, and kids being shot and floating down the river right before your eyes.
In the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main character, Salva Dut, faces many undeniably difficult situations that require him to show qualities of determination and perseverance. Salva was an eleven-year-old boy living in Southern Sudan when the Civil War broke out in 1985. This war was being fought over religion. Families were displaced and forced to live in refugee camps with people from different tribes. Salva endured more hardships to show perseverance such as walking in a desert, leading The Lost Boys, and finding his family.
At this point in the story, his uncle was the only person who he was close with and he was murdered right in front of Salva’s face. Now Salva doesn’t have any family, friends, and he’s not sure how his birth family is doing. So, he must survive and live off of people who don’t like him to get to a refugee camp that kicks him out, due to the instability of their government. After that horrid event, he was forced to watch his friends be murdered to get rid of the refugees. Although many horrible events happened in Salva’s life up to this point in the story, he will continue to go on and to be
A part where he is confident is after his Uncle got shot by the soldiers from the North. In the book it says “Despite the numbness in his heart, Salva was amazed to find himself walking faster and more boldly than he had before.”(Park 65). It also says “Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove It.”
On this journey of running from war he lost his group of people that are Dinka’s that he was with and stayed in a barn with a woman. He also couldn’t find any of his family at this hard time but when he found a new group of Dinka’s to stay with Salva had found his Uncle. He also made a really good friend. Until they both died and Salva was by himself again with nobody he knew. Some hardships that Salva faced during this time in A Long Walk to Water were lots of water problems, wild animals, and no family.
To sum up, Salva did make it through the stressful journey, Salva has been back and forth visiting his biological family and his forster family that lives in New York.. This journey lead him to the person he is today by inspiring people to not give up on a dream or idea they had. Today Salva is continuing a program for South Sudan “ Water For South Sudan” which builds wells in different villages in South
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
Shray Bagga Mrs. Honegger 7th Grade ELA, Period 4 30 January 2023 Salva Mawien Dut Ariik: A Role Model Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a famous activist, once showed the most important quality of a human when he said, “The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience, but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges” (Springboard 6). In Linda Sue Park’s realistic fiction novel, A Long Walk To Water, Salva, an 11-year-old boy, shows this quality and exhibits peak performance while he is running from the war in the African country of South Sudan.
Salva uses his inner strength as courage to stay strong in order to find his family. This is seen in the beginning of the book when Salva is at the rebel camp and the soldiers order them to separate into two groups, men in one group and women, children, and elderly in the other group. Salva sees someone his age entering the men’s group, so he follows. When he tries to enter, that is when a soldier points a gun at his face.
Salva’s labor shows he will do anything to survive, and nothing will stop him. Once Salva started walking, another factor of his survival kicked in, He was a very lucky young boy. Salva was very fortunate because he didn’t get shot or attacked by crocodiles. In the text it states “Stunned, Salva realized that being forced under the water had
