Why do we make choices? Everyday we make a choice, whether it's to get up in the morning or sleep in, dress up to school or dress casual to work, each day we are hit with thousands of choices to make. Now women are being forcefully relinquished of their rights to certain choices. Recently, abortion has been a reemerging topic amongst the Supreme Court. With the overturning of abortion rights, two separate views on abortion have formed. The “Pro-Life” advisors argue that abortion is murder, and fight for the birth of the baby. On the flip side, “Pro-Choice” advocates fight for a woman’s right to choose what happens to her own body. No matter which side of the argument is “right”, what is for certain is that women’s health and safety outweigh …show more content…
An abortion is an extremely private matter, and is ultimately up to the patient. Safe and regulated healthcare is crucial for personal health and wellbeing, and taking this away from women is stripping them of their rights. A child in its fetal stage relies on the mother for survival, so why do abortion laws bypass the mother keeping the child alive’s rights? “The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), with over 57,000 members, maintains the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for the nation’s women’s health physicians. Abortion care is included in medical training, clinical practice, and continuing medical education.” The practice of an abortion is still included in medical training, so politics aside, it is still a major part of healthcare. It is honorable to mention that the majority of Supreme Court who voted in favor of overturning Roe v Wade were male. Why is the fate of women’s reproductive rights being decided by men? Of course it is easy for a man to vote against abortion, because that is a decision they will never have to face. Male healthcare has never been discriminated against nor turned political. Yet time and time again women have to fight for their rights to their bodies, minds, and lives. This brings about the question of what “Pro-Life” protesters are really fighting for, because it is obviously …show more content…
Pregnancy complications can include an ectopic pregnancy, preeclampsia and eclampsia, and so many more. In many cases, these symptoms and disorders can be so severe it can cost a woman’s life. “In 2021, 1,205 women died of maternal causes in the United States.”(Donna L. Hoyert). Now imagine these numbers if abortion was off the table, the numbers would skyrocket. As thus far, states who have banned abortion have made rape, incest, and life threatening conditions exceptions for abortions. Nevertheless, doctors will now shy away from proceeding with an abortion as to not receive legal actions against them. Abortion in many states is chargeable as a felony. Without access to abortion, women will die untreated, contradicting why such laws are put in place to begin
Abortion has been a controversial charged topic that encompasses complex ethical, moral, legal, and even religious dimensions. The debate surrounding abortion largely revolves around two opposing positions: pro-choice and pro-life. Proponents of the pro-choice stance argue that the decision regarding pregnancy should rest with the woman who is carrying the baby, emphasizing the importance of women's reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. On the other hand, advocates of the pro-life perspective prioritize the inherent value and right to life of the unborn fetus, advocating for its protection and preservation. Given the diverse and often conflicting opinions on this matter, the question of whether a pregnancy should be dependent on the choice
For the past forty years, abortion has been a topic of great discussion in the subjects of ethics, politics, and law. This is largely attributed to the landmark decision made by the supreme court in the famous Roe v. Wade case where it was decided that women have the constitutional right to an abortion during the first two trimesters of pregnancy provided it follows the regulations put in place by the state. This case has been contentious since the court passed down its decision in 1973. The deep political divisions that the case created reflect not only conflicting social and moral views, but conflicting views of law as well. Supporters of the decision believe a woman 's right to choose whether to have an abortion or not is a fundamental right,
In addition, banning abortions in certain states also affects women by making them travel up to thousands of miles, spending hundreds of dollars just for a clinic that will legally take care of her. That is a lot, especially for a pregnant woman that is already struggling with this tough decision, almost equivalent to a punishment. Additionally, abortion isn't something easy on a human body; there can be heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, etc. Traveling can be a lot for someone who just got an abortion, especially with the after effects of it. With that being said, some women don't even have the option to travel for that access, leading them to carry against their will.
A pressing women’s right issue that has divided the nation for the last 40 years is Abortion. It’s a procedure in which a woman medically terminates her pregnancy, this option to terminate a pregnancy has come under great fire due to moral permissibility and ethical concern. The right to abortion was granted on a constitutional basis under the landmark decision by the supreme court case, “Roe Vs. Wade” but has been attacked and attempted to be dismantled by sweltering opposition by several special-interests groups.
In 1973, after Roe v. Wade was passed, the rate declined by 50%” (Roe v. Wade Overturned). Not only are abortions part of a woman’s basic reproductive rights, access
Those who are pro-life believe that the government should make it their responsibility to intervene to protect all lives, including that of a fetus. Those who are pro-choice believe that the
In the article “Abortion: No More Apologies”, author Katha Pollitt uses examples of sexism toward abortion regulations. The article states, “If you are injured or die or are trapped by the police, you’ll only have yourself to blame, because the real reason you are here on Earth is to produce children, and you shirk that duty at your peril” (“Abortion: No More Apologies” 13). In the 1960s, feminists argued that abortion should be a woman’s choice. Abortion, under a constitutional right, is protected under privacy. If more regulations on abortion are put into place, women will start to seek unsafe and dangerous procedures.
The pro-choice philosophy believes that a woman should have the right to have an abortion within the first trimester (at least). This group supports the use of contraception and education for people on sex.
The pro-choice/pro-life is a major argument in politics in the United States today. However it is not so simple as pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice has been coined to mean that women should have the right to choose abortion and it should be a legal option. Pro-life has been connected with the banning of abortion and looking at a fetus as a life so abortion is basically murder. However this pro-life view has gotten very convoluted.
Before Roe v. wade the number of deaths from illegal abortions was around 5000 and in the 50s and 60s the number of illegal abortions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. These illegal abortions pose major health risks to the life of the woman including damage to the bladder, intestines as well as rupturing of the uterus. The choice to become a mother must be given to the woman most importantly because it’s her body, her health, and she will be taking on a great responsibility. A woman’s choice to choose abortion should not be restricted by anyone; there are multiple reasons why abortion will be the more sensible decision for the female.
A women’s right to personally decide what she wants done to her body in any medical situation has been something they have fought for many years. On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court set a precedent that gave women that right. Along with this right to decide came the legalization of medical abortions. This is a subject that affects all American citizens nowadays, both men and women, because of the recent protests such as the Women’s March on Washington. As citizens of the United States, men and women alike, we know the historical past of what women have fought for and what rights they have been given due to that fight.
Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life Abortion. The word alone has the power to make a room go still. The popular debate topic has a reputation of provoking aggression no matter where it is mentioned due to its strong relation to people’s rights and ethics, but does it really need further deliberation? Abortions should be kept legal across the United States for a multitude of reasons: they allow people to stay in school and work, largely lessen likelihood of would-be-parents falling into economic depressions, prevent overload of responsibilities to the unprepared, protect women’s rights to privacy, help reduce the number of parentless children, conserve resources, give options, decrease maternal injuries, lower crime rates, and maintain the amount of federal spending on welfare.
[They hope for “pro-lifers” to join pro-choice activists in preventing unwanted pregnancies.](Wolf, 1997). They feel that a common ground can be met to which these debates will no longer exist. They realize the other side’s arguments and understand some of the cruelty. They still believe in a woman’s choice but wish to prevent pregnancies all together and stop all of the arguments. Abortion has many sides, but a woman’s choice is what needs to be protected.
Abortion Abortion is the ending of pregnancy by abolishing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. Abortion is a very controversial topic, for example, one side of this topic believes abortion is cruel and committing murder, while the other side believes that since the fetus or embryo isn 't developed enough to be considered a living human being yet, that abortion is not commiting murder. Despite this information, there is a lot more to abortion than the opinion of it being “right” or “wrong”. According to “Students for life” who are pro life, about 1 million abortions are executed each year in the US. That data adds up to 22% of pregnancies ending in abortion.
The two sides of the debate are pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life is the people who do not like the idea of abortion. They claim that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder. They also say that the fetus can feel pain during the abortion and that it is unfair to families that cannot conceive on their own that are waiting to adopt
