In the book of His Excellency: George Washington by Joseph J. Ellis, the author introduces Washington, the Father of the United States, in a fresh portrait focused on the characters of Washington. This book is an impressive biography of Washington's remarkable dedication to the United States history. According to the author, George Washington is an omnipresent figure as he was growing up, described as the man in the moon who was aloof and silent. This book focuses on Washington's wartime service which became some of his major contributions to the United States, rather than merely telling the true story of Washington, its main thesis is focusing on analyzing his contributions and how his governorship had affected the American history. Washington's life is divided into three areas in this book.
Strong, devoted, and dedicated conspirators are one of the main things you need in an assassination plan. Booth struggled to have every member to be loyal, and trustworthy. Even though Booth had some strong accomplices like David Herold and Lewis Powell, although his gang all together was a weakness in his plan. “David Herold, an experienced outdoorsman hunter, and tracker, would accompany Lewis Powell, take him to Seward’s home, and guide the assassin, unfamiliar with the capital’s streets, out of the city where he would meet up with Booth.”
Lewis Powell and George Herold, both apart of Booths Gang were on there way to try and assassinate secretary of state William Henry Seward. Harold waited outside with the horses for the escape and Powell went inside to attempt assassination. He got very close to killing Seward, he stabbed him and cut him all over. But what were the odds that Seward did not die. Everybody thought he was dead so news started spreading fast about the death and assassination.
They ended up finding two men who they thought was the two and killed them. Caputo, along with one of his Marines, was tried for the murder of the two boys that were executed under Caputo’s orders.
Timothy Webster Timothy Webster is one of the most famous spies in the Civil War. He worked for Allan Pinkerton, the leader of one of the most famous detective agencies ever, and was the first spy to be executed during the Civil War. One of his major successes, and the reason he has been remembered so well, was the prevention of Abraham Lincoln’s pre inauguration assassination. No one knows what would have happened if Webster had failed, but if there had been a different result regarding the assassination then the country we now live in could be a very dark and miserable place.
The questionable Culper Ring spy organization was a great stand for Americans. The significance of this group was important to President Washington for acknowledging the whereabouts and movements of British forces. Although President Washington was completely unaware of the actual identities of the members of the Culper Ring, he personally communicated with them through coded letters using only the coded nicknames that were given. President Washington realized the importance of this group and spent roughly ten percent on these types of activities. In the long run, the money did not go to waste and the group was a
To accomplish the perfect assassination Booth must enlist some help, so he calls on some of his coconspirators to help him get the job done. Among Booth’s entourage are Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt. These conspirators believed that their mission was to kidnap the president, but Booth had other plans for them. Blackmail and a lot of convincing made this group of people join Booth’s evil plot against the
“The spy ring established a sophisticated method of conveying information to Washington” (“Culper Spy Ring”). Washington had many mistakes in the past that he had to make the culper spy ring extremely secret. “George Washington
They used Betty Pack as a spy because she did things that a guy could not, like flirt with another guy. So let's talk about how Betty got roped into helping with the war because she was originally just a wife to a diplomatic, until she got bored and her priest friend was taken into jail. She took action and had persuaded the diplomatic envoy to push for a release, and it worked. This caught the eye of an MI6 agent in London. After this happened before she even became a spy she was able to get
Nick decides to phone the news of Gatsby to West Egg Village, where a spy role would play the higher power, the government or FBI agents, the residents have countless questions about Gatsby that were all directed towards Nick. Spies are usually responsible for their intelligence officer, as the duty goes both ways, if either one gets caught, the other one is in immediate danger. Nick realizes, “it grew upon me that I was responsible because no one else was interested — interested, I mean, with that intense personal interest to which everyone has some vague right at the end” (Fitzgerald 125). At the end of the day, the FBI has authority over the actions of intelligence officers and their spies, making the whole business a sort of hierarchy. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “The FBI is the lead agency for exposing, preventing, and investigating intelligence activities, including espionage, in the U.S.” (Wray), this means that when the West Egg Village asks about Gatsby, the inside spy, or Nick is responsible for relaying that information so it can be dealt with accordingly, and in some cases, it’s the opposite, with the Intelligence officer, or Gatbsy relaying the information to the FBI on behalf of the
“Atzerodt had doubts about his assignment. He would not do it, he said,” (Swanson 27) writes James L. Swanson in his novel Chasing Lincoln’s Killer. George Atzerodt was a slow-witted German member of Booth’s band of conspirators. He enjoyed clothes, food, and fame as provided by John Wilkes Booth, and was involved in the inner Conspiracy, although he refused to take any actions. He was condemned an active conspirator by authorities and hanged for his alleged crimes.
The men arrested would not speak of who sent them there but they were later traced back to Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President members. Nixon seemed to be in enough trouble, being moderately involved with this scandal, it was then known that the crooks had also been wiretapping the office and stole copies of top secret files. Although even to this day it is unknown if Nixon knew of the break-ins in the Watergate while it happened, it is fact that the President had sent hundreds of thousands of dollars in “hush-money” to the burglars to keep it out of the public eye. Nixon and his affiliates then began attempting to create the CIA to stop any further investigations of the FBI’s on the Watergate scandal (Staff). The former president continuously denied he was involved in the scandal, until the court ordered he handed over recordings that proved he attempted to redirect the fact-finding (“Richard”).
Though the novel Chasing Lincoln’s Killer includes lots of information about the entire conspiracy, including many pictures of the suspects involved, the other two works do not. In the excerpt from The Plot to Kill Lincoln, the author chooses to talk mainly about Booth and Lincoln. She includes very little about Lewis Powell and nothing at all about either David Harold, Mary Surratt, nor George Atzerodt. The producers of Killing Lincoln also mainly revolved the movie around Booth. However, they also included lots of staging where David Herold was with Booth and give plenty of information about Herold, too.
In addition to the unknown support, another interesting fact not very well known, until this book is read, is the greater plot that was meant to happen. Booth had not only planned to assassinate the president, but through co-conspirators, he also planned to assassinate the vice president(Andrew Johnson), as well as Secretary of State Seward. Luckily, none of the other attacks were able to follow through, which were to be made happen by Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, and David Herold. However, because their plot failed, not many people know of the attack. “This news seemed to prove to Booth the faithful Powell had carried out his mission.”
