The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the biggest mysteries in American history to date. I do not believe the citizens of the colony were forced to leave. Before he left, John White, the former governor of the Roanoke Colony, had instructed the colonists to carve a Maltese Cross into a nearby tree if they were forced to leave. When he returned, there was no sight of a cross, just the words ‘CRO’ carved into a nearby tree as well as “CROATOAN” carved into the gatepost of one of the forts. This lead White and his team to believe that they had moved to Croatoan Island, present day Hatteras Island, with no sign of force. However, no search was conducted since a day later, a big storm caused them to leave the area. I believe this is what happened
