The short story “The Strangers That Came to Town” by Ambrose Flack takes place sometime in the mid to late 1900’s in America. At first the setting is described as dark and stormy however it changes and takes place on Syringa street, a beautiful and old neighbourhood. Syringa street is a charming country lane surrounded by cottages, pretty flowers and some vegetable gardens and hen houses. Explain why the setting is important to this short story. Would the plot work as well in another setting? The setting is important to this short story because it sets the mood and tone. Also it helps give the reader a mental picture of where and when the story takes place. Near the beginning of the book the Duvitches are made out to be unattractive, weird, and different. “They were considered unattractive physically. They were so meek! The Duvitches never fought back”(17) The townspeople judge them for their looks rather than their personalities. Towards the end of the book, Andy and his family get to see the true colours of the Duvitch family. When Mr Duvitch “remarked that since Andy and Tom caught the fish, he’d feel better if we all shared them” during dinner, Andy and his family felt that this was a generous and kind thing to do.
