Although there is not much said about his younger years, at the age of thirteen Andrew joined the U.S. military, fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. He was captured by the British but later released due to the pleading of his mother to the British. While in captivity he was once asked to polish the boots of a British soldier. He refused and the soldier drew his sword and went to slash him but Andrew put his hand in the path of the sword and it cut his hand and the side of his face, both cuts left scars which were reminders to him of his hatred of the British.
