The War on Drugs has been going on for over 40 years, but in that time drug use and abuse has hardly gone down. In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared the War on Drugs Campaign. What came with this was a national mission to end the use of schedule one drugs like marijuana, cocaine, Heroin, LSD, and methamphetamine. All of these drugs are defined as drugs with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse”(DEA.gov). From there the federal and state governments began making ads, commercials, and sending out representatives to speak out against drug abuse, but all the money that goes into pumping out billboard ads and television commercials has to come from somewhere. Since the war began in 1971 the American Federal Government has wasted over one and a half trillion dollars. “One in three people admit to trying marijuana at some point in their lives”(“Marijuana Use and ItS Effects”). One year before Portugal decriminalized all drugs another region closer to home decided to take a step in the same direction. In 1973 Oregon was the first state in the United States to legalize marijuana for medical use. For about twenty years after that not much attention was given. Then in 1996 California also legalized marijuana for medical use, and shorty after in 2006 Colorado legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Then in 2012 Colorado decided to legalize marijuana for recreational use. As of 2016, twenty-three states and Washington D.C have legalized marijuana for medical use and many people are in favor for legalizing the drug for medical use. A few countries have already adopted medical marijuana programs for example: “Israel, Canada, and the Netherlands all have a medical marijuana program”
Within the last 22 years, from 1991 to 2013, the prescriptions written by doctors for opioids have increased from 76 million to 207 million. Opioids are a drug class that were developed originally, to treat severe pain for people who are dying of cancer or other severe illnesses. This began when pharmaceutical companies assured the medical community that people would not become addicted to opioid pain relievers. As a result doctors began to prescribe opioids more frequently. There are different kinds of opioids.
I. Importance: As American deaths from drug overdoses continue to rise in the United States, the nation is faced with a public health crisis so profound that in October 2017, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic to be a national public health emergency (Merica). President Trump’s declaration came after numerous studies indicating the danger opioid addiction posed; for example, a 2016 study entitled “Increases in Drug and Opioid-Involved Overdose Deaths—United States, 2010-2015” claimed that drug overdose deaths “nearly tripled during 1999-2014,” reaching a startling high 52,404 deaths in 2015 (Rudd, et al). These statistics are more than just disturbing revelations regarding the opioid crisis; they are evidence of a serious problem that is rapidly affecting the lives of more and more Americans every year. Death by overdose is not the only public policy concern, however, as millions of Americans are also addicted to prescription opioids.
As states begin to legalize medicinal marijuana, the issue begins to grow with the recreational use as well. Several states legalized the use of medicinal marijuana in the 2016 election including: Florida, Arkansas, and North Dakota. Other states have
Drug courts, initially propelled in Florida in 1989, are an arrangement of escalated treatment and supervision. The thought is to treat the instances of peaceful substance-mishandling guilty parties uniquely in contrast to other criminal cases in light of the fact that the dependence is at the base of the criminal action. Accentuation is on recovery instead of discipline. Drug Courts are the best equity intercession for treating drug-dependent individuals the purpose of drug courts is to diminish drug use, lessen wrongdoing, spare cash, and it reestablish lives with sparing more hardship on the kids and reconnecting families together. Drug Courts serve a small amount of the assessed 1.2 million drug dependent individuals presently included in the equity framework.
Since 2012, the electorate in 3 states and Washington DC have decided that marijuana should also be legalized for use as a recreational drug, to be sold, regulated, and taxed in a manner similar
The defendants’ exchange of $20,000 cash for the 20 kilograms of packaged cocaine demonstrates that the defendants knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully attempted to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute the cocaine. Arranging with Summers, who was in Syracuse, NY to meet the delivery driver in Fremont, Ohio and to exchange cash for cocaine is evidence that the defendants knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully attempted to possess cocaine and consequently, venue in the Northern District of NY is proper. To prove attempt, the people need only establish that the defendant had the intent to commit the underlying offense and the defendant took a substantial step towards that end. Anderson, 747 F.3d at 73.
Throughout the rest of the 1900s the enforcement of punishments of possession have become much stricter. In 1996, 56% of California voters approved of proposition 215. This legalized cannabis for medicinal use. Since then cannabis has been legalized for medical use in Alaska, Arizona,
I will admit, this year’s presidential election will be one for the books. From email scandals to failure to pay federal taxes for almost two decades, Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has had me and many Americans in quite a shock, creating a gossip worthy presidential election like no one has ever seen in American history. For me, this election has been a mix of laughter and fear. The shots that Clinton and Trump have taken at each other have been hysterical, especially during the first presidential debate. It’s all fun and games until reality hits me
As most people know, drug can easily make people addicted. Conventional drugs such as opium, heroin, methamphetamine (ice), morphine, marijuana, cocaine can all classify as narcotic drugs and psychotropic drugs. Drug has been a severe problem for decades. The U.S government attaches great importance to this issue. However, there are just an increasing number of people calling for legalizing drugs.
As of 2018, medical marijuana has become legal for medical use in 29 states and Washington D.C., and more states allow for the use

Drugs have been around this earth for many years. Production, disruptions, and consumption have gone hand and hand together. Due to the high rise of consumers causing death, addiction, and drug-related crimes led to this "War on Drugs" to be declared by President Nixon in 1971. The war on drugs was a government tactic to decrease drug abuse and drug-related crimes, yet led to severely punishable sentencing if convicted of possession, selling, trafficking, or disrupting. This led to the convictions of any drug-related crime increasing tremendously not only in color communities but anyone.
The War on Drugs that the government has been fighting for almost two centuries has been a failure. The War on Drugs has made criminal organizations, violence around the world, and drugs themselves worse. The War on Drugs has negatively affected the lives of millions of people around the world as it has led to massive incarceration in the United States; corruption, political destabilization, and violence in Latin America, Asia, and Africa; to systemic human rights abuses across the world. Prohibition of certain drugs has actually led to higher rate of violence and murders all around the world. Which drugs are legal and illegal is not really based on any specific scientific assessment of the relative risk of the drugs, but it has everything
Some may not be too familiar with the war on drugs and the effects it has had on the society we live in. The war on drugs was started by the Nixon administration in the early seventies. Nixon deemed drug abuse “public enemy number one”. This was the commencement of the war on drugs, this war has lasted to this day and has been a failure. On average 26 million people use opioids.
In spite of the movement to abolish certain potent drugs, narcotics trafficking continues to pose a significant threat to even first-world societies. Nevertheless, the “War on Drugs” within the past few decades has weakened the grasp of drug traders, although this extends beyond the United States. Yet, millions of dollars have traded hands, as well as unfathomable amounts of illegal substances in the name of drugs, even after this advancement. While the problem is at its worst in less developed countries, the effects are still undoubtedly felt in more advanced nations. Bolstering this notion is the UN’s updated 2012 drug resolution, proclaiming that “despite continuing increased efforts by [worldwide governments], the world drug problem continues
