The army has been focusing on developing soldiers into leaders and making leaders effective leaders. The Army has dedicated so much time to developing leaders that there is an entire ADP just to help leaders. ADP 6-22 covers everything you need to know about developing your leadership skills. Army Regulation 600-100 Army Profession and Leadership Policy define leader development as the deliberate, continuous, sequential, and progressive process, grounded in Army Values, that grows Soldiers and civilians into competent and confident leaders capable of decisive action. The goal is to have Army leaders who have purpose, direction, motivation, and vision for their teams while executing missions.

The Army Focuses on these three because Leaders need to share the challenging experiences they have had so that Soldiers know what not to do. Leaders know best about the challenge of being in the Army, paying bills, and being away from home. It is a Soldier’s job to be ready, but it’s a leader’s job to make sure they can handle everything coming. From pt in the morning to know the job it’s the leader’s job to ensure they are ready. The army has made this a focus because it really is important. Leaders produce leaders, not followers. There are too many followers in leadership positions in our military. Leaders need to advance their education in military and civilian schools. The smarter you are the better use you will be in the modern work environment. When a leader gets schooling it encourages his guys to do schooling too. A leader should always encourage his guys to get schooling whether they plan on staying in or getting out. When a leader advances in his education it makes him a more reliable source, someone other leaders will trust to go to. Some leaders will hang their certificates up so that their guys will see them and realize that everything he’s trying to encourage them to do he has done. This is a great way to inspire your guys to get more certs in and outside of the military. Schooling in the military can be a very good option for Soldiers across the board. In this essay I will be informing you on Army leadership and the profession. ADP 6-22 is a publication that displays and writes about Army leadership and the profession. It covers the attributes and core competencies of leaders at various levels. It covers how they act decisively and ethically in uncertain situations. It also expresses the expert’s knowledge and skills of the Army profession.
Leader Competencies are leadership skills and behaviors that contribute to superior performance. Leaders outdated skills and behaviors encouraged change over many years. The three main categories of competences are to Lead, Develop, and Achieve. Army leaders serve to lead others, develop themselves, environment and profession as a whole, and to also achieve organizational goals. In order for an Army leader to lead they must apply the attributes to guide Soldiers towards a common goal and mission accomplishments.
It teaches that regardless of facing great challenges, a military leader must demonstrate resilience and insistence. A leader must be flexible in his judgment, beliefs, tactics, and actions. By following Wheeler’s example, a leader must do the utmost to accomplish maximum results with available resources. In addition, discipline is one of the most important characteristic of an Army at all times. Leaders have the obligation to command their troops under any situation and under no circumstance should never allow the lack of discipline.

Added to the supervision and oversight of their daily duties, I as a leader am there to help, guide and give that listening ear when needed in whatever capacity. Ensuring that they are aware of all the military and or personal options, and opportunities that are available to them are taken advantage of. Progressing in their careers and a clear path for their future is another aspect of my leadership philosophy that I hold first and foremost. No junior soldier that has passed through my path, whether they have been assigned to me or just work under the same command/unit has not gotten the three infamous questions that I have come to ask throughout my career: 1. What are your goals in life?
The NCO 2020 Soldier concept encompasses many different types of challenges from meeting the challenges of our new type of warfare to the vast difference skill sets that the new army soldiers have. We also need to consider the fact that many soldiers have deployed multiple times in Afghanistan and Iraq over the years, gaining knowledge on the art of our type of war and understanding the limitations our soldiers and leaders have encountered. This makes our senior Soldiers and junior NCOs very smart and adaptable in today’s constantly challenging environment. All of the soldiers that did not have combat experience were at a strong disadvantage. The Leadership courses were failing the soldier because the training did not help teach them the lessons learned in combat.

This creed given to the Young Officer Course of 2014 has all the answers to becoming a leader who truly leads by example “Fit to Fight Fit to Lead” Soldiers and war go hand in hand therefor it would be expected for soldiers to go into training so that when the time comes for the war he/ she is competent and physically capable of overcoming the enemy. As the officer in charge of these men who will send them into battle, you would want to be certain that if you send your men into fight that they won’t desert the country or the mission given and that they can be successful in achieving the goal.
Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
Leaders must apply the Army Values when leading soldiers because of the fact that it builds trust and a bond. The same goes for the soldiers, in order for them both to work as an effective team and to get the mission done efficiently they both must live by these values. Once these values are integrated in a soldier’s lifestyle, it becomes too easy to work as a unit. An example on how loyalty and respect fits in a day to day to situation would be, a soldier witnessing a misunderstanding with his or her team leader and a higher ranking NCO, the soldier knows that his or her team leader is in the right. The soldier shows loyalty by standing by their team leader and shows respect by approaching both their team leader and the higher ranking NCO with tact to explain the situation from their understanding and what they witnessed.
The three skills are Leads, Develops, and Achieves. I try to use this method of leadership when leading others I influence and motivate them to pursue the goal. Also by leading from the form and doing setting the standard. Secondly, when developing my subordinates, I try to implement a positive environment so that all my soldiers can flourish and work as a team. A positive environment helps encourage soldiers to take the initiative and may cause them to want to work harder to gain more individual responsibility.
A lot can be accomplished just in how we talk to each other. As a leader, I will talk to you, not at you. Take your position seriously - whether you are new to the Army or a senior leader- your role is important and adds great value to the overall mission. I’m a firm believer in doing your absolute best at all times; don’t aim for substandard. Remember that it is okay to ask for help, it is okay to not know something, but you should always be striving to learn and improve.
Furthermore, a study made by Amit et al about leadership-shaping experience found that a group of soldiers who had more leadership experiences were perceived to be leaders compared to those who did not . This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.
Military leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Another significant aspect of emphasized by the army is charisma. Therefore, army strategy to have a great leader is to choose people with high charisma since follower are always drawn to leaders with charisma. By having a high charisma they can command the follower easily. The basic task of a leader are: achieve the mission with zero fatality.
