“Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns, 30,000. Suicides. Domestic violence. Gang shootouts. Accidents. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost their family and friends due to guns (Luckerson).” Former President, Barack Obama distributed a verbalization regarding the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting along with addressing many other gun violence incidents which have occurred in the past. Barack Obama delivered his speech, “New Gun Control Measures” on January 5, 2016, with the use of powerful pathos which appeals to the emotions of the audience. This was accompanied by enriching ethos which allows Barack to exploit his position, as president, to become more credible. While delivering his speech, Obama uses his authoritative glance, and elaborate hand motions to emphasize his points. Which he makes throughout the extent of the speech over the current gun laws. Obama wants to make it clear that he, in fact, does not want to obtain our guns, but secure our safety. He allows the audience to …show more content…
This does not portray an inevitably bad notion for someone in a commanding position as Obama was. In his speech, he verbalizes his particular experiences with gun violence which sanctions America to visually perceive that gun violence. This does not just affecting the working or lower classes, but the higher empowered class such as the President. This excerpt from Barack Obama’s speech shows when he used ethos. “I think we can disagree without impugning other people’s motives or without being disagreeable. We don’t need to be talking past one another (Luckerson).” This verbalization illustrates when Obama is utilizing ethos to confirm his argument by explaining that there are different positions on the matter. All of those positions require handling the situation anon to avert another from occurring in the
His remarks appeared at first such as a conceivable occurrence; then, as the discourse proceeded, there was line after line that thoroughly focused to react to particular remarks from Republican applicants, proof of how nearly Obama is following the race to succeed him. " Anybody asserting that America 's economy is in decrease is selling fiction," he terminated at Trump. He dismisses "over-the-top claims this is World War III," contra Chris Christie. "Our answer should be more than intense talk or calls to mass bomb regular people," he cut at Ted
In order to convince the American people that black prosperity is an idea worth preserving, Obama uses his high status to give moral and meritorious credit to things associated with African Americans. He does this in a way that makes
Part 2 of our course focused on the analysis of a wide range of political speeches and on the use of rhetorical devices. More specifically, we have studied the debate on gun violence and how different politicians presented their point of view either in defence of or against gun legislation. For this task, I decided to take on the role of Senator Christopher Murphy and to discuss the ongoing problem of weak gun control in the U.S.A. by using a political speech. This text type, written to be conveyed at the Senate after the Parkland, Florida mass shooting, best suits my intentions , since it would be likely for the topic to be discussed in the two Houses after the tragedy. It makes use of ethos, given the senator’s personality and his long history as a
Utilizing personal pronouns such as “we” and “our,” Obama provides emphasis on the existence of global unity for any substantial change to become possible. For instance, “Science is how we were able to combat acid rain,” “We must continue to nurture our children’s curiosity,” “We must keep funding
The United States is a country which every day is as much as changes in their justice systems, as in the constitution in order to defend the rights of citizens and improve as a country. Is America a country completely free of injustice, discrimination and respect for the rights of citizens ?. There are two things related to the improvement and stability of the country. According to Obama's Speech he was trying to make many changes and implement new laws for equality of all people as well as a fair justice system for all citizens regardless of race. In his speech the appeal rhetorical most used was Logos, after pathos and finally ethos.
Obamas political speech was about putting racial differences aside and focusing on more important issues. Such as health care, climate change, terrorist threats, and a falling economy (Barack, 2008). The thesis of Obamas speech was connecting races and pulling the differences into the light. The main purpose of the speech was to answer for racial comments that Reverend Wright had made. The speech barely touches on that and focuses more on the subject of race in America.
It was a sad morning on Friday, December 14, 2012. Adam Lanza, came into The Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in a shooting rampage. According to “Sandy Hook Elementary shooting leaves 28 dead, law enforcements say,” an article by Steve Vogel, Sari Horwitz, and David Fahrenthold, Adam Lanza came into the school and shot six adults along with twenty other children. Before the shoot Lanza shot his own mother, then preceding the tragedy, he shot himself. Many activists for gun control are reaching out try to ban guns in America.
“I get it. I know what it’s like. ”(Obama 70) This piece of evidence succeeds at ethos because he is relating to the kids who have daily challenges in their lives. More evidence with ethos is on 70, “ Jazmin, Andoni, and Shantell
John F. Kennedy in his speech, the Inaugural Address, explains his dreams and plans for the United States as he attempts to unite the citizens. Kennedy supports his ideas on the future of the country and conveys his message by using rhetorical appeals such as ethos, pathos and logos, good structure and figurative language. Kennedy’s purpose in this speech is to persuade and inspire citizens to unite and strive to keep America a peaceful and stable place to be. While the speech’s respectful eloquence is appropriate for the occasion of an inauguration, its youthful energy and look to future make it distinctly John F. Kennedy’s.
Shown above is former U.S. President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe together at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima on May 27, 2016. Many significant aspects litter this event, including the date in which the picture had been taken, considering he was the first standing U.S. President to visit in decades, along with the moral purpose of the photograph which helps Obama convey his underlying message to any audience. The thousands of lives and lasting infrastructural damage induced by the atomic bomb truly sorrows Barack and his sympathy and remorse is apparent. Barack Obama’s visit depicted by this photograph conveys his message to an audience that may not fully understand the scope or degree of the use of a nuclear
On an important day in 1961, John F. Kennedy delivered a speech to the people all over the US and around the world that still gets quoted today. He made this speech to unite and make everyone come together. In his speech he used various examples of ethos, pathos and logos that really helped the speech and people come together. He as president would write the speeches himself and wouldn’t let others write it for him and is praised by many people because of that. John F. Kennedy didn’t use a lot of ethos but the ones he used were very good because it got the point across clearly.
Beginning on January 8, 1790, the State of the Union Address has performed as one of the most informative and effective ways for the President of the United States to address members of congress with future plans, past reflections, and current achievements. The State of the Union address for 2018 was given on January 30 by President Donald J Trump. In every speech given a strong use of some sort of rhetorical appeal is used, whether it be ethos, pathos, logos, or multiple. Focusing on the starting portion of President Trump's Union Address he begins to describe the achievements of his administration over the year that he has been in office. When defining these successes he also takes the time to acknowledge several people who have showed heroism
In the Commencement Address at Morehouse college in 2013 given by President Barack Obama, he was able to connect with his audience by using Rhetorical appeals. The three strategies Obama focused on was pathos, ethos and logos, by using those he was also able to reach and persuade his audience to follow his advice and guidance. Each strategy that President Obama used had a different meaning. He would use pathos to make them feel certain emotions, logos to persuade the audience by the use of arguments that they will perceive as logical and ethos that would be perceived as credible (or not). The most effective rhetorical appeal that was used in the speech was pathos.
Actions speak louder than words. Not only does Obama express that in his speech, but in everyday life. Obama cares for every individual, and makes it clear in the given speech to find solutions for the issue of immigration instead of just giving up when times got hard. Making for an appeal to pathos because it moves people emotionally and shows that Obama cares for not only people individually, but the overall
