One of my fondest memories has always been waking up every day of summer to the slight hint of sound of the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA” playing in the backround of my whole entire house. That melody, in my house, meant my Dad was going surfing. Technically, he was blasting that song in the garage while waxing his surfboards, but it was so loud that it would echo into the house. If I wasn’t lazy, I would jump out of bed, eat the bacon he made me knowing I would wake up ready to surf with the “Beach Boys” cue, and then hop into the car to go surfing with him. My dad grew up, and still is, obsessed with the Beach Boys, therfore, I grew up always listening to them. Most of the time, I was with my dad during the summer. The group's original lineup, the “garageband”, was made up of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine (who was replaced by David Marks, before rejoining). Their humble beginning was accelerated by Brian Wilson’s musical intelligence and his experimentation with audio recording techniques and songwriting. Despite the complexity in their music, especially in their album Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys easily identifiable sound has underrated their true influence on American culture. The memory of the Beach Boys’ musical experimentation and complexity is hindered by their wider recognition as a surf-music-playing-garage-band. Their largely recognized pop hits and unique talents sustain their success and spread their influence throughout the world, as they have reigned America’s best selling rock and roll act. Their name, Beach Boys, came from their song “Surfin’ Safari” when they had it aired at a local radio station and their name became a perfect fit.
