Lastly, Ben Loy’s move to San Francisco symbolizes his balance between new and old Chinese cultural values. As Ben Loy leaves Chinatown New York, he states, “New York represented parental supervision and the reckless mistakes of youth,” (Chu 245). Ben and Mei Oi are now about to leave the Old World- symbolized by New York and embodied by the domestic relationship between Wah Gay and Ben Loy and the sexual relationship between Mei Oi and Ah Song- and are able to begin their new life in the New World, symbolized by San Francisco. Travel Writer Kellie Schmitt wrote the essay The Old Man Isn’t There Anymore when she lived in China for two years. She writes about the death of a neighbor and a case of mistaken identity. It begins with the news that a family in her communal apartment building has experienced a loss in their family. Her confusion with the layout of the building, the identity of her neighbors and their connection with each other, and her halting progress with the Chinese language sets the stage for her confused progress through this strange social world.
Introduction Metal engravings were common in the sixteenth century, in all probability because in those days, they were the easiest means of rendering multiple copies of an illustration. These engravings were made by using a sharp tool to engrave an image onto a thin metal sheet. The sheet was then smeared with ink and the engravings traced on the sheet to a paper. Creating copies for publication was potentially Theodore De Bry’s idea in engraving John White’s watercolors, which depicted the Native Indian life, in the sixteenth century. However, De Bry was not true to White’s depiction of the Native Indians in creating these engravings.
Schmitt narrates in a fascinating and descriptive way wherein her readers feel as if they are experiencing her circumstances with her. At the beginning of the narrative, the reader can relate to Schmitt’s challenge in getting to know her new neighbors, especially with the challenging language barrier. Schmitt speaks of how she is “persistence... repeatedly [trying] to engage [her neighbors], saying hello at every encounter” (Schmitt 108). The readers continue to relate to Schmitt’s struggle to understand a new culture with the following scenarios: Schmitt offers her neighbor brownies, only to have it occur to her “that Chinese traditionally don’t like excessively sweet Western desserts” (Schmitt), and when Schmitt arrives at her neighbor’s home with a basket of red roses to offer her sympathy for their mourning, she regretfully realizes
In the book Biggie, by Derek Sullivan, it takes place in a small town in Iowa called Finch, where almost everyone plays sports. Biggie however, is an overweight kid who sits at a computer desk during all of his free time. Biggie eventually meets a girl named Annabelle, who he falls in love with right away. Biggie goes to gym class one day and throws a perfect game in wiffle ball and then is pushed by his brother and his mom to try out for the school baseball team. Throughout most of the book Biggie is in love with Annabelle, although at the end of the book, Biggie ends up meeting a different girl named Courtney that he ends up falling in love with.
In the novel “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang (2006), it talks about three different people’s stories. The author starts off with telling a story about a monkey called the Monkey King, who lives in the jungle, seeking for higher power to become considered a god in the book. The author also tells a story about an American born Chinese boy named Jin Wang, who moves from San Francisco and struggles with fitting in at a new school. The last story the author tells is about a boy named Danny who has his cousin Chin-Kee from China visit every year. Danny ends up struggling to keep his reputation in adequate shape at school after his cousin visits causing him to switch schools often.
Suyuan’s American Dream starts in her heart when she decides to escape from the chaotic China and find a better life by immigrating to America. However, she loses her two babies on the way to Chungking. American Dream means different things for different people. Suyuan has fulfilled her American Dream in a certain degree by trying to provide her daughters with successful, blissful and better lives. First of all, Suyuan left Kweilin for Chungking in order to find her husband and avoid the Japanese.
This disagreement quickly became a source of resentment and anger for both of them, but Jing-Mei and her mother were unable to resolve this conflict because of their different backgrounds and experiences. The story showcases how relationships between mothers and daughters can be strained because of differences in culture and a lack of communication. One of the difficulties between Jing-Mei and her mother is their different cultural backgrounds, which is supported by two points from the story. Jing-Mei was immersed in American culture as she attended school every day, as opposed to her parents who were both born and raised in China. As a young adult who experienced two cultures, the barrier (including language and culture) between Jing-Mei and her parents contributed to “vigorous [denial] that [she] had any Chinese whatsoever below [her] skin” (Tan 147). Still, her mother was convinced that Jing-Mei would eventually come to “feel and think Chinese” (Tan 147). Although she disagreed with what her mother said, Jing-Mei knew deep inside that she was right, frequently realizing the tendencies she had that were so alike to her mother. She listed that “haggling with store owners, pecking her mouth with a toothpick in public, being color-blind to the fact that lemon yellow and pale pink are not good combinations for winter clothes” were some of the things that her mother did that the naive fifteen-year-old Jing-Mei identified with being Chinese.

Family in Chinese Culture As shown in Amy Tan's short stories A Pair of Tickets, Immortal Heart, and Two Kinds, one can see the importance of family in Chinese culture. In the piece A Pair of Tickets, it is shown how hard Jing-mei's mother Suyuan looks for the twin babies she is forced to leave behind. Her effort is shown when Jing-mei's father recalls the travels, saying, "We went to many different cities, back to Kweilin, to Changsha, as far south as Kunming. She was always looking out of one corner of her eye for twin babies, then little girls" (Tan, A Pair of . . . " 163, 164).
Jing did not feel as if she was Chinese, since she lived in California; she felt more American. Once the train entered China she felt as if she was becoming Chinese. “The minute our train leaves the Hong Kong border… And I think, my mother was right, I am becoming Chinese” (241). Jing Mei, while portrayed as an obedient child, is only willing to listen to her mother to a certain extent. Throughout the story, it is consistently hinted that Jing Mei would eventually explode against her mother as an attempt to free herself from her mother’s chains. In addition, after the fiasco at the piano recital, she eventually derives further from her mother’s wishes as she “didn 't get straight A...didn 't become class president...didn 't get into Stanford...dropped out of college.” (54). On the flip side, Jing Mei’s mother is a stereotypical Chinese parent who is fully determined to ensure her daughter’s success in a new environment.
