There has been many occasions in the modern day where movies are made from a story or book and the movie seems to have very little related to its inspiration, but little did I know that this has been happening since the 1930s. The Most Dangerous Game movie tried it’s best to stick to the original plot but many details have been altered for the sake of cinematics.
The Most Dangerous Game short story was written by Richard Connell and was released on January 19th, 1924. The story follows a man named Sanger Rainsford, a well-known hunter who has released a book or two on the subject of hunting. Robert Rainsford however, survived a horrific crash leaving only him alive, and everyone else dead either on impact or by shark. Sanger Rainsford tries to reach the yacht, but is quickly out sped. Sanger swims for about ten minutes until he reaches land, and flops into a deep sleep. Robert Rainsford just easily walks onto land, and into Count Zaroff’s mansion. When Sanger Rainsford wakes up from his blackout, he finds it to be late afternoon. Sagner follows a trail on hunting boots to General Zaroff’s mansion. When he knocks on the door he is greeted by a gun and man. Robert Rainsford is simply let into the count’s mansion, no question or anything (not really the best security system). Robert is greeted by Count Zaroff, and finds two other ship wreck survivors in the mansion as well; Eve and Martian Trowbridge. Obviously when movies are made from a story or book, not every detail will be incorporated; due to money, time, or entertainment as a few examples. But I feel that The Most Dangerous Game movie just changed too much that they didn’t need too. The main thing that bothered me was the incorporation of Eve and Martian. I would have preferred the movie with out them, because I feel like it took away from the creepiness of the original, especially when Rainsford it’s trying to survive the night. The movie portrays it more that Rainsford is trying to protect Eve, rather than Rainsford protecting himself.
Another really big change that I didn’t enjoy at all, was the ferry crash. I do understand the idea of it, and being honest, that’s what I originally thought was going to happen in the story. What didn’t need to happen however, is literally everyone dying expect Rainsford. I feel like, theoretically, that makes no sense. If one man managed to survive, at least one other person would have been able to survive as
