Carl-Lee Hailey is on trial for the murder of the two rapists who raped his daughter Tonya Hailey who was only 10 years of age. There is no doubt that Carl-Lee Hailey did shoot the two rapists and I believe that he should be convicted. His ten year old daughter Tonya was viciously brutalized by two white men Pete and Billy Ray. They abducted , raped and beat Tonya. Hailey did what most parents would do. Determined to see that the two rapists got what was coming to them, Hailey took the law into his own hands and shot them both down in cold blood inside the courthouse on the day of their trial. It occured while deputy Dwayne Powell Looney escorted the two men to the courtroom that Hailey emerged from the basement of the building and used a assault rifle to shoot them both dead getting him arrested. Carl- Lee Hailey used to work at a mill in …show more content…
Hailey got arrested at his house and was scheduled to be placed on trial which gained the attention of the national media. Despite efforts of trying to convince Hailey to choose some of their high-powered attorneys, Hailey, however, wanted to be represented by his friend Jake Tyler Brigance who previously defended his brother. Judge Omar Noose denied bail and also denied Jake's request for a change of venue to a more ethnically diverse county, meaning that Hailey would have an all-white jury resulting in a unfair trial. The brother of Billy Ray Freddie Lee Cobb planned his revenge on Hailey for killing his brother by getting the help of the Ku Klux Klan. On the first day of Hailey’s trial, the Klan rallied but were outnumbered by counter-protesters consisting of the area's black
The court case Roper vs Simmons was one of the most influential Supreme Court cases that dealt with the issue of whether or not juveniles should receive the death penalty if they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime. In this case, Simmons and a group of his friends planned to commit a burglary and a murder. On the night of the crime, “Simmons and his two friends entered the home of Shirley Crook. Simmons recognized Crook from a car accident they were involved in before; he “later admitted to the police that “this confirmed his resolve to murder her.” Simmons and his friends tied Crook up and put her into the truck of her car.

Hae Min Lee’s ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was found guilty 6 weeks later and has been serving time in prison ever since. The state found Adnan guilty, but I do not believe that he was the culprit.

In the five years between 1803 and 1808, South Carolina alone imported 400,000 slaves (Jones, 2004). These were so many slaves that pushed slavery to other regions like Louisiana and Georgia. The Northern States were reluctant in fighting slave trade as they were more concerned about the new government and feared to be in conflicts with the south. Most of the states thought that slavery was a passing cloud and that it was bound to fail sooner. The invention of the cotton gin made the cash crop all the more lucrative.
