Moral Dilemmas Caused by Artificial Intelligence “Morality is primarily concerned with questions of right and wrong, the ability to distinguish between the two, and the justification of the distinction.” Scott B. Rae once said that morality is focused on the differentiation of right and wrong in a certain scenario. This concept can be applied to many situations in life. Specifically, this ideology can be applied to the novel, “A Separate Peace”, by John Knowles. In this book, the characters, Gene and Finny, are confronted with moral dilemmas. More specifically, Gene was tasked with the moral choice of expressing the truth about Finny’s injury. The moral choices that the characters in the story had to decide between are similar to today’s teengers …show more content…
Using artificial intelligence can be morally right if the intended use is for improvement or better understanding of something. In an interview with Darren Hick and PBS NewsHour, Darren explained the vast benefits, consequences, and moral choices associated with artificial intelligence.“Assign a prompt to your students. Have your students put that into ChatGPT. See what essay it produces and then write a new essay that analyzes that essay, says what it gets right, what it gets wrong” (Yang 2023). Having artificial intelligence as a resource can be beneficial. However, this causes a moral dilemma to occur. Many people realize that artificial intelligence can be used to complete assignments. The moral dilemma is that if someone uses artificial intelligence to complete assignments, they are not learning the content or curriculum. On the other hand, artificial intelligence can save students an abundance of time. Students are faced with the dilemma of learning the content at hand or spending time on more exciting things. This supports the idea that there is a moral choice when using artificial intelligence in an academic setting. If teachers can introduce artificial intelligence in a way that engages learning, such as revising and studying an essay written by artificial intelligence, then students will be less likely to use it for plagiarism. According to an article written by the University of San Diego, “Some students may be shy about taking risks or receiving critical feedback in the classroom, but ‘with AI, students can feel comfortable to make the mistakes necessary for learning and receive the feedback they need for improvement’” The use of artificial intelligence presents many benefits to students in a classroom. Some students may feel uncomfortable expressing their inquiries in front of a crowd. Artificial intelligence can be used to help provide answers to students who need assistance with their work. However, this presents another issue. Students may have the temptation to use artificial intelligence to complete assignments without putting any effort into it. This issue could be resolved by teachers advising students that they should not use artificial intelligence because it hinders their abilities to learn. If students only use artificial intelligence to complete assignments, they will never learn the material. So, if the use of artificial intelligence is catered towards helping students with possible inquiries that they have, then students will be able to learn at their own pace and receive specialized feedback on their coursework. This also takes the strain off of teachers who use their time to address questions that students may have. This allows teachers to focus
However, after the “incident” with Finny he had a different perspective of the river, which included a mixed feeling of guilt and fears. Gene had realized that he made a mistake and because of this mistake and shaken up feelings, his friendship went down the drain. Soon Gene also learns that friendship is all about trust and he broke that with his best friend, Finny. Even though their perspectives on friendship were completely different, they both realized that friendship is not all just about love but also needs a firm foundation of
Self-regarding and immaturely, this leads Gene to resent Finny for “…the deadly rivalry…” between them (46). Rashly, Gene assumes Finny keeps trying to cause him to fail his studies by encouraging him to jump off the tree limb or cut school to go to the beach. This seems to be true to Gene because anyone encouraging him to disobey the rules must wish him
Gene becomes his most petty and vicious self. This is a battle for Finny and Gene because both of them battle with and come to learn their true identities. Gene realizes what he has done and feels terribly guilty. He is worried that Finny is going to realize that his fall was because of him. He is also worried that once Finny sees his face he will automatically accuse him.
Gene is a quiet boy who tries to focus on his academics; however, Finny is a daring boy who can charm and talk his way out of any situation. Even though Gene and Finny are best friends, Gene is extremely envious
In John Knowles’s coming of age story, A Separate Peace, the author forces Gene to face the realities of adulthood and the war, but first he must shed his childhood, represented by the character Finny. Despite Gene’s desire to mature, he finds himself unable to make a clean break from Finny. This leads to a love-hate relationship that Gene must resolve before moving forward. Finny represents Gene’s childhood by preventing him from growing up and moving on to something else. In the mind of a child like Finny, war does not exist.
The confusion on the fall prevented the characters of Finny and Gene from growing as individuals. In order to become adults, they needed to stop avoiding the truth. Leper, who had been to the war, a place of harsh reality and truth, was the one to reveal the truth about Finny’s fall. It made sense for Leper, the bearer of reality, to introduce this truth to Finny and Gene. He took away the perfect world they were living in and opened them up to a whole new stage of life.
Finny flagrantly disrespects Gene’s feelings of guilt, Gene’s right to tell the truth, and his own honest virtues. After Gene admits his crime, Finny threatens to “hit” (Knowles, p.70) and then “kill” (Knowles, p.70) him. Due to this, Gene feels even more guilty than he did before; he thinks that telling Finny may have caused a “deeper injury” (Knowles, p.70) than the shattered leg. Partly because Finny is selfish, Gene suffers psychologically for the rest of his life. Moreover, during the winter session, Gene calls Finny; Finny wants to make sure that Gene has recovered from his bout of craziness.
In result of Gene’s insecurities, he is unable to express himself fully which leads him to steal someone else's that he is envy of. Gene starts to realize that Finny’s personality
Have you ever had the feeling of fear and jealousy because of your friend? Well, in the novel, “A Separate Peace”, written by John Knowles, there are two friends named Gene and Finny. They both go to Devon school in New Hampshire; Gene if a very smart student that can be the head of his class and Finny is a very good athlete who is up for many awards at Devon. Gene though throughout the story feels this sense of jealousy and the fear towards Finny, Finny is always getting Gene to do stupid stuff that usually always gets him into some kind of trouble. But as the same things go on Gene starts to feel that Finny is out to wreck his studies, so in result of that he pushes Finny out of a tree and shatters his leg.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that, “envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide.” (370). John Knowles’ A Separate Peace is set during World War I at Devon School, a boarding school for boys. The book centers on Gene Forrester, a student at Devon, who could be described as an intelligent, but jealous, conformist. A Separate Peace illustrates Gene’s envy and imitation of his friend, Finny, and how it affects himself and his relationship with Finny, and also how Gene eventually finds peace.
This article fits with my research because it talks about the positive outcome artificial intelligence can have in the educational field. It is fairly simple to read and was helpful by proving the positive impact. It address the pros and cons about the educational AI that could be used to help students with courses they are having difficulties
Artificial Intelligence and its effect on the workforce Artificial intelligence(AI) is a recent reality of technological advancement affecting human society. To analyze its effect on the workforce we will look back in history for technological disruptions and how they affected the workforce and compare and contrast to the way AI is currently impacting and will continue impacting the human workforce and other aspects of human society such as economics, politics and the general environment. History Throughout history technological advancement has affected human society in its ways of living, working and its environment.
Artificial Intelligence is the field within computer science to explain some aspects of the human thinking. It includes aspects of intelligence to interact with the environment through sensory means and the ability to make decisions in unforeseen circumstances without human intervention. The beginnings of modern AI can be traced to classical philosophers' attempts to describe human thinking as a symbolic system. Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: Literature Review The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, authored by Nick Bostrom and Eliezer Yudkowsky, as a draft for the Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, introduces five (5) topics of discussion in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethics, including, short term AI ethical issues, AI safety challenges, moral status of AI, how to conduct ethical assessment of AI, and super-intelligent Artificial Intelligence issues or, what happens when AI becomes much more intelligent than humans, but without ethical constraints? This topic of ethics and morality within AI is of particular interest for me as I will be working with machine learning, mathematical modeling, and computer simulations for my upcoming summer internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Norco, California. After I complete my Master Degree in 2020 at Northeastern University, I will become a full time research engineer working at this navy laboratory. At the suggestion of my NSWC mentor, I have opted to concentrate my master’s degree in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Algorithm Development, technologies which are all strongly associated with AI. Nick Bostrom, one of the authors on this article, is Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University and the Director at the Future of Humanity Institute within the Oxford Martin School.
The attraction of artificial intelligence for me lies in its breadth of applicability, both as a method of problem solving in itself and in a symbiotic integration with other areas of computer science. A broad spectrum of applications exist within the artificial intelligence field, ranging from intelligent non-player controlled characters in computer game software to a ubiquitous computing solution that intelligently reacts to a variety of users. This diversity is one of the main reasons that I feel compelled to pursue artificial intelligence further. While I have striven to develop my understanding of artificial intelligence during my undergraduate education, the choreographed requirements of a bachelor's degree have restricted my research to only a minute sample of artificial intelligence’s applications. During my exposure to the field, I have often been unsatisfied with the level of interaction artificial intelligence displays in response to prompts of varying complexity.
