The period of the twentieth century, specifically the nineteen-twenties, was a historically significant event in history due to the dramatic changes politically and socially. In this time period there was many altercations between two specific groups who had completely different outlooks on change. Modernists, or people who tended to be in favor of new ideas, styles and social trends, embraced the idea of change during this time period whereas traditionalist, or people who are opposed to change, had deep respect for long held cultural and religious values that they believed should not be broken under any circumstances. “Flappers” better known as a groups of young woman who wore skirts, had bobbed hair, frequently listened to jazz, and tended to use sexual behavior fairly often. The picture of the group of Flappers in Document L shows the specific styles of clothing and traits of the Flappers during the twentieth century(DOC L). In the twenties, the traditionalist viewed them in a negative way. If one was considered a flapper, it meant that she had many sexual encounters. Traditionalists didn’t want women to strive to be like that. They had stated that a way that a woman’s dresses “affects her morals as an individual”. Flappers however didn’t seem to care though as to how the many viewed them. In 1922, Ellen W. Page had published an excerpt called “A Flapper's appeal to Parents.” This describes what it was like being a flapper and having the freedom to walk around proudly knowing that people are judging. “If one judges suppose I am a flapper... and other affairs at men’s colleges.” (DOC K). The prices of products had begun to fall due to a system developed by Henry Ford called mass produce packaging. This is where he produced the same type of goods on a large scale which caused the prices of the products to fall. People were over the moon about this system because it made products affordable. Many were also fairly excited to see that billboards were starting to pop up in the cities as well as that new board games were invented along with crossword puzzles. New technology started to become readily available for citizens as time passed on. Because of this, the era became known as the “Machine Age”. Radio broadcasting went from local to nation stations and the news,politics and music were all broadcasted. Movies began to experience one of the most fastest growths during this era because of the fact that the movie stars were making $100,000 for a single screen picture. As the movie industry was having a huge impact on daily life, mechanization was taking a huge hit as well. Cars such as the Model T, were producing so effectively and quickly so that producers were able to sell them at a price that was affordable.
