According to BrainyQuotes, Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to sometimes bigger than oneself” (Inspirational Quotes). This applies to my grandfather, Charles Jones acts who spent time as a U.S. Air Force firefighter during The Vietnam War. He took action and became a fire chief, but now he refers to himself as an average person; however, due to his service he is a hero.
Jones expresses heroism by overcoming the struggles of training. Once he was sent to the US Air Force Recruiting Office at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Undergoing exercising first of his 8.5 weeks of BMT (Basic Military Training). He learned firefighting techniques like tapping your opisthenar against a doorknob before opening a door while in a burning building; otherwise, you have a burnt hand. He once had to rescue a Vietnamese family from a house fire. “It was severe”, he said; it was one of the tensest situations he’d faced. According to the article entitled The Psychology of Heroism, saving others while risking your life is one of the monumental acts of heroism (Cherry). In addition, this explains that Jones have demonstrated a selfless act, another reason why he’s heroic. Lastly, Jones endured the tragedies of The Vietnam War. He and his comrades observed the aftermath of some battles; glancing at injured soldiers being carried off an infirmary, and the deceased shipped off to their homeland cemeteries. Later they honored them; however, they still felt melancholy. He managed to overcome the tragedy; furthermore making him a hero. Charles Jones is definitely a hero, for going through tough obstacles of military training, fighting fires, and enduring tragedies of war. However, he still claims himself a regular guy, so this can be interpreted that any decent person can become a hero, whether through small or big
