The Affects of Child Neglect In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and Laurie Anderson Halse’s Speak Child neglect is very apparent. Child neglect is very common in parent-child relations. Imagine a young child who gets bullied in school every day. When they come home they try to tell their parents but they do not care for the child's emotions. They then have to bottle up all of their emotions and never get to talk about their pain. This is what it is like to be in a household where the parents neglect the child’s emotional needs. Child neglect is defined as, “failure to provide for the development of the child in all spheres: health, education, emotional development,

As Rathnayake says, not all neglect is physical, one's parent can give them what they need to survive but not what they would need to have a positive mental state. Child neglect has many different ways that it can hurt people. Anne Blumenthal, an expert in social work, says that” Children who are deemed neglected are at increased risk for antisocial behavior, poor school performance, criminal delinquency, and psychopathology, among other serious long-term consequences”(Blumenthal 2). Both Melinda and Juliet exhibit these signs, showing the neglect of their parents. In the texts both Juliet and Melinda are neglected by their respective parents, Lord Capulet and Joyce Sordino. Through the analysis it is shown how mental neglect of children can be detrimental to their emotional state. Many parents to be absent in their families, neglecting their children. People can neglect their children’s emotions in different ways though, some parents, like Lord Capulet, who knows what their child feels but simply doesnt care about what they want. Although some parents, like Melindas mother, may not know what their children actually feel which leads to horrible consequences just like the other forms emotional neglect. Psychology helps people understand each other by showing what causes people to do what they do. Such as a child who continuously makes rash decisions and acts out, through the use of psychology researchers can find how they have been neglected, and how it affects them physically and mentally. Through the understanding of others every person will be able to live a happier and more fulfilled
Two young lovers from feuding families die tragically in the play of Romeo and Juliet. While it might seem that their actions caused their deaths, a closer look shows a deeper level of responsibility with Juliet's parents. An example of this is, Lady Capulet is furious with Juliet for refusing to marry Paris, saying "I would the fool were married to her grave!" (3.5, 154). The parents' influence and decisions play a significant role in Romeo and Juliets death.
He calls his daughter degrading names and projects the disconnect from father to daughter. This is contrary to Melinda and her mother because Lord Capulet was wanting Juliet to be happy and thought that Paris would bring her that happiness. Lord Capulet had good intentions, but he did it in an inefficient way. In short, Although Lord Capulet treats Juliet as if she has no rights to her emotions, he does have her best interest at heart. This differs from Melinda and her mother in regards to her mother’s views or consideration for Melinda at
Andrei Lankov claims, “To not have your suffering recognized is an almost unbearable form of violence”(Lankov). It is very harmful for someone to repress their feelings because they just suffer more. He believed that even if someone isn’t being physically hurt and abused, they are still being harmed in an unnecessary way. They are bottling up their feelings which then translates to them having an inappropriate way. According to the article “Stop Child Abuse and Neglection” it expresses, “Child neglect is defined as act of omission or Failure to meet the basic needs of child” (“Stop Child Abuse and Neglection” 2022). In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and in the novel Speak, Juliet and Melinda both suffer from neglect.
Chien Tran Mrs. K. Brown English 9 Honors June 12 The Cause of Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet [Introduction - Done] When love takes a tragic twist, the question of responsibility for the outcome of the doomed relationship inevitably arises. In an exciting story of love and rivalry unfolds against the backdrop of Verona’s fighting families in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Within this timeless story the actions and impact of crucial figures are revealed, each playing a significant role in influencing the course of events that lead to the young lover’s horrible demise. The tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet are caused by the actions and influences of multiple people, including Friar Lawrence, the Nurse, and Juliet's parents, as their collective
In contrast, if Benvolio were to understand this behavior as abnormal, Romeo could receive the help he needed in order to escape this feeling of terrible pain and stress. Therefore, with proper education of depressive behavior, parents and relatives could provide help for their children. In addition, a parent of a child with suicidal tendencies, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained a very similar statement. “I would feel like a failure. Like I didn’t realize my child was in that much pain
EVIDENCE (LI & PC): Neglection is never suitable for a child growing up. Thomas D. Morton in Helpful voice in your ear: County program helps rebuild bridges between parents, children, shares the idea that “child neglect can lead to severe difficulties in sustaining interpersonal relationships and neglect is of several types such emotional aspect, inconsistent parenting behavior and depressed parents”(Morton). EXPLANATION: To explain, when a child is neglected it can not only affect the child, but it can affect the relationship of their parents as well. For example, as parents drift away from their children and begin to focus on more important problems, their children may feel forgotten about.
Then leading to banishment of Romeo because he was enraged and killed Tybalt. Readers can connect to this because once in life one has had a love. All because the parents simply hated each other and unknowingly causing their lovely children and unlovely demise. It reminds me of the 1997 film Titanic about a man who offers his fiancé an adventurous life. They board the Titanic only to sink to their deaths.
Parental neglect has a huge impact on children. It can make children psychopaths, killers, terrorists, and even sexual predators. Multiple studies show that children that do not get the proper nourishment from their parents show that they are more likely to be failing school and to not succeed in life. Also, studies show that children that are neglected from their parents can be related to other failures in life. Parents are the children’s role model and they influence how their child will be raised.
Parental Figures in Romeo & Juliet The fact that we still read The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare 500 years after it was written is honestly, surprising. One of the interesting components in the story is the relationship between the parents and children. The relationships with Romeo and his parents, Juliet and her parents, and the nurse and friar to both of the children are all some interesting parts of the play because they all affect both Romeo and Juliet. Romeo’s relationship with his parents was more distant, but they still cared about him.
They teach them right from wrong, they have decisions on how they dress, who they are friends with, where they grow up, who they are supposed to hate and like, Even in some cases who they are to marry. the family's the Montagues and Capulets have a life long feud, which affects everyone around them. One reason that the parents are to blame for the cause of the suicides and deaths in the play is how they've been fighting with each
Adults have great influence over the young impressionable minds of children, especially as parents or parental figures. It is their responsibility to help lead and guide them down a safe, successful path. However, many misuse this power, intentionally or not, causing more harm than good. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet’s lives are ended early due to the poor choices made by two adults they’d trusted: Friar Lawrence and Juliet’s father, Capulet.
Abuse is another thing that has been linked, to problems in a child 's development. The earlier abuse and neglect occur in a child 's life the more severe the impact. Furthermore, the stage of development, while the abuse occurs will influence the type and severity of the consequences. Additionally, the more chronic and long lasting the abuse and neglect, the more harmful it is. When the abuse and neglect are caused, by parents or another significant figure a child, becomes confused because their supposed source of safety is the source of their harm.(Frederico 343).
One of, if not the most important issue regarding child welfare is the role parents play in their children’s lives. A major issue facing the protection of children is lack of proper parenting education. According to research by the National Children’s Alliance “More than 3 million American children are investigated for child maltreatment each year. " The site also states that “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually" and even more alarming statics is that “In 2016, an estimated 1,750 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.” A major part of this issue stems from parents who overwhelmed or are underprepared to be parents lacking the proper resources and parental knowledge to take care of their children.
Child Neglect- the negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a parent or by a caretaker under circumstances indicating harm or threatened harm to the child’s health or welfare. Child neglect is something different than actual abuse although some may argue it is some form of abuse, reported cases of neglect outnumbered those of physical abuse. There is that very fine line between actual neglect and poor parenting; it covers a wide range of activities, and there is no single set of factors established that clearly divides neglect and poor parenting if child neglect is detected everything must be viewed with caution. Parent that neglect their children hold a certain set of characteristics they have an inability to
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet completed by William Shakespeare has a solid theme. Love is the play’s most important and dominant theme especially the intense passion that shows up between Romeo and Juliet. The secondary character I chose was the Nurse. Without the Nurse’s approval, Juliet wouldn’t have gone through marrying Romeo. Another theme of this play is fate because the two families are so against each other but Romeo and Juliet find a way to come together.
