In the book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer the main character Chris McCandless is not a role model and no one should be following what he did. After Graduating from college Chris thought it would be best for him to leave everything behind including his family and all the money his very successful father had left for him. Chris wanted to become homeless so he could figure out who he is as a person. One of the many reasons Chris left was because his father had two families and Chris's mother knew about his fathers double life but they both hid this from Chris and this made him furious. Chris went to the Alaskan bush in the winter and brought little supplies with him because he wanted to live off the land and survive with nothing, which is a horrible idea because Chris has no prior knowledge …show more content…
If Chris had a map the outcome would have been completely different. Chris goes into the Alaskan bush in the winter while the rivers are still frozen over and are easy to cross. When Chris decides that it is time to leave and he feel like he accomplished what he wanted in total isolation without contacting anyone he knows and scaring his family making them think that he is dead, he tries to leave the same way he came in but the river that had once been frozen over is now a raging river with freezing temperatures from the glaciers and dangerous rapids that will kill him if he attempts to cross. Chris decides that it would be better if he went back to the bus and stayed longer to try and make a plan to get out without dying. Chris first job was to get food he has a wild edible plant encyclopedia that he uses to forage for edible plants. He ends up finding a berry that is claimed to be edible in his book but the berry is poisonous and this is the start of Chris's slow and painful death that could have been avoided if Chris had more prior knowledge about edible plants and what you can do to survive without any
He not only worried about the material things he was going to use to survive like his rifle and rice. But also educated himself with books. Chris was using logic, for example is there was no game in Alaska what was going to be his plan B? He would have no other choice but to eat plants, Berries, fruits? Chris needed to know what was edible so he wouldn't just go out to eat everything and commit suicide.
With all the information gathered, I believe that Chris made a mistake of going out into the Alaskan wilderness because he lacked supplies, didn't have enough knowledge of our natural survival, and he didn't have a map. One of the largest reasons Chris’s adventure turned fatal was because he lacked supplies like food. Hence
According to Jim Gallian, on page four, “He wanted to walk deep into the bush and ‘live off the land for a few months.’ ” This shows the fact that Chris wanted to just go straight into nature away from everyone else. Being away from civilization also made it to where he could just truly be himself without being judged or looked down upon. Chris was also an adult who is allowed to make his own choices with his life as long as it doesn’t harm himself intentionally or
Chris moved out of his apartment in Atlanta, Georgia and hit the road, leaving his life behind to start a more ominous and adventurous one. The author wrote, “Five weeks earlier he’d loaded all his belongings into his little car and headed west without an itinerary,” (Krakauer 22). This shows that Chris went with the flow when he left. He traveled to different locations based on instinct and intuition. Chris took a huge risk by packing his stuff and traveling west because, if anything, he knew that danger was the one thing on his itinerary and could not be avoided.
If he'd known about it, crossing the Teklanika to safety would have been a trivial matter.” If Chris had done some research on the land and area he was in he would have known about the basket and wouldn’t have died. Finally “Below the Morelos Dam, the river turns into a maze of irrigation canals, marshland, and dead-end channels, among which McCandless repeatedly lost his way”. This finally shows that Chris didn’t take his time to learn the environment and the landmarks around him to help him
there was other ways to get close to life and experience such an empowering environment. their several things chris should have done to avoid his very own death, if he really wanted to. One thing for sure he could've left a note to let his parents know, but now there's a problem with that, he probably didn't want to leave a note because he didn't want anyone to worry about him. he wanted to experience his journey by himself with no worries of anybody trying to find him or just anyone to even worry about him, but i don't think he should've taken this route as much as he didn't want to be found i don't think he would've been either way, the least he could've done was stop everyone's worrying by saying something at least maybe a call when he was out in his journey. with that said he was successful at not being apart of
“He needed money to buy some new gear… I even pfferd to buy him a plane ticket to Fairbanks” (Page 6). This evidence shows Chris arrogance, because he was donating all his money (over 20k), giving away, then later on burning and burying his essentials he could have used throughout his journey because he didn't think he needed it, leading to his downfall. This reveals thoughout his journey, Chris was given opportunities to receive help and use his tools and money to his advantage, but he refuesed because of his independent nature and arrogance, not thinking he would need these vital supplies, and help from
And he ended up accomplishing what he wanted to do even though it resulted in the death of Chris. I think that it was right for Chris because it was what he wanted to do. In the book Chris is obviously very determined to go to Alaska in the way that he wanted to get there. Chris says “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant memories, joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found.” This is from when Chris wrote the letter to Ron trying to convince him into living a different lifestyle of adventure.
Thank you. Thank you. This quote stuck with Chris because it's what he wanted to do with his life. Live it to the fullest. I also think that he would have survived if he also brought a map because he was getting lonely and sad so he wanted to go back home to his family so he left the bus and he walked until he reached a river but the river was to strong
Alaska is a place of extreme weather easily reaching into the negatives. So what did Chris do to prepare for this insane idea of living off the land in this mess? Chris brings with him a 10lb bag of rice, a guide of edible plants in the area, a camera, and a 22-caliber rifle. So Chris was not well prepared for this feat and while he was intelligent he was not a wilderness expert. Of course, Chris knew he could have prepared better but he stupidly turned down the people that tried to help him.
Chris wanted to leave but he couldn’t find his way out of the forest. Chris could’ve found his way back if he had a map. “He left the map in galliens truck” (krakauer). A map is key to surviving. If he had a map he would´ve known there was a cabin nearby.
He wasn’t afraid of not coming back alive. So when he went into the wild in Alaska, Chris felt like he was for sure going to come back and publish the book that he has written throughout his journey to show others that taking risks like this is totally okay. Unfortunately for Chris it wasn’t okay. I believe that he did not intend to “kill himself” for going into the wild with basically nothing.
Taking a journey into an unknown state can cause many problems, but with no map or proper equipment, more problems arise. In the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris wanted to escape reality/society but he went into the adventure blindsided and unprepared. He did many things and didn’t think of his family and friends back home. When Chris left his whole life behind, he did some questionable things that made him a reckless and arrogant person by not being prepared, throwing his life away, and made arrogant errors that caused his death that could have been prevented.
I think he just wanted to pursue life in a different way. Chris was not seeing life the way anyone else was, so he decided to brush off into the wild and be free on his own. Though he did not survive, he was still a very bright, arrogant human being. Shaun Callarman states, “He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness.” Chris knew going into the wild that he did not have much survival skills, but that did not stop him from doing what he wanted to do because he did not care about society and was just completely over everything which was why he made the move to the wilderness.
He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble ideas. Really, I think he was just plain crazy,” shows that Shaun believes Chris had no common sense in his doing for leaving society for the wild. I agree with Callarman’s position of thinking “ he had no common sense” and that he was “bright and Ignorant” because Chris thinks he did not have much to offer in his society, ditched all his possessions to take a trip into the Alaskan Wilderness and did not have much common sense or survival skills. Chris McCandless was very courageous for ditching all his possessions to take a trip in the wilderness.
