During the Civil War in the 19th century, one problem the war solved was to protect and keep the Union together. The war successfully stopped the South from seceding. That was the main purpose of the war before the question of ending slavery was the main goal of the war. Abraham Lincoln voiced that he did not want war when he was first elected, but when the slave states wanted to secede peacefully, Lincoln didn’t take that lightly. He felt that secession in any form is an exercise of power (Hakim 16). Lincoln was trying to get the Confederates to give in to the North by January 1st, 1863 (Lincoln 1862). This was a part of the Emancipation Proclamation and if the Confederates were to surrender, they could keep their slaves, and keep the Union …show more content…
African-Americans in the army would be mocked, mistreated and had lower ranking jobs like finding the dead corpse. Some of them were even called ‘monkeys’ by their white counterparts (“Glory”). This happened throughout the war, and even Union soldiers would make racist remarks towards the blacks. Garrison Frazier, who was a black minister said that freedmen would want to live separately from the whites after the war because of the prejudice against them (Sherman and Stanton 1865). This shows that racism during the war was an important subject back then that freedmen will try to separate themselves from the whites so they won’t face prejudice and hate. After the war, the relationship between the ex-slaves and the whites were bitter. Former slave owners are now asking their ex- slaves to work for them again. Many didn’t, and a lot of people still hated against them. Freed slaves often barely talked to their former masters again, and when they did, they was a lot of hate between the two races (Homer 1876). The black lady in the picture “The Old Mistress”, you can see the freed ladies right next to the old master. The former master seems to have her teeth gritted while the freed ladies didn’t show respect to her and had a fist while looking at their former master. This show the bitter racism that was a problem brought up by the Civil War
First, during the years 1936-1938, 2,300 people, who were former slaves in the United States, had been interviewed about their own experience of slavery by the Federal Writer’s Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was able to interview people in over seventeen states to preserve the ex-slaves life for people who did not live in those times of slavery. These sources are responses of the ex-slaves feelings about this “peculiar institution”. These interviews were documented to ensure an accurate history of the ex-slaves experiences before they died of old age or disease.
At the outset of the Civlil War, Lincoln originally wanted to limit the amount of bloodshed and destruction as much as humanly possible. The goal was not to destroy the south, or to engage in any prolonged warfare costing valuable lives and resources for the Union. “Erring secessionist staes were to be taken back into the Union, and Southern society was to be reshaped (80).” McGovern further adds that “The authoirty of the national government was to be reestablished by respecting, not abusing, the constitutional rights of the rebels (80).”
His primary goal of saving the Union was accomplished by announcing the Emancipation Proclamation, which sent a message of Northern assertiveness to the South and by winning the Civil War. By declaring that slavery was illegal in the rebelling states, he changed the purpose of fighting in the North from saving the Union to freeing the slaves thereby fulfilling his second goal, freeing the slaves in the rebelling states. Through this, he showed other countries what the South stood for and showed that the Union was now aligned with other countries when it came to slavery, which was his third goal, having the Union set an example for the rest of the world. His fourth goal, of creating unity in the Union was accomplished by using inclusive language in his speeches suggesting that people were greater than the states; therefore not allowing the states to secede. Therefore, through analyzing Lincoln’s speeches, one can him change his goals as the war
In February of 1861, seven states from the deep south, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, decided to secede from the union. The succession was due to the growing fear that the institution of slavery would be stripped from them. Prior to the succession, from the 1790s to then, there had been constant conflict instigating that the north and south were progressing in two very different directions, and by the time of the Civil War there a significant wedge had been driven between the northern and southern states. There were four significant and critical incidents that wedged a gap between the north and south and led to the coming of the American Civil War, the invention of the cotton gin, Nat Turner’s
When Lincoln ran for office in 1860, he did not have the intention of ending slavery. However, during the years of the war, he uses it to his advantage so that he can defeat the Confederacy and to win favors of the
The Civil War had the most dead men ever in US history. No ordinary person would want to be a part of that gruesome war. Why would Texans volunteer to fight in it then? This all started when “the glue that held America together began to unstick in 1820 (Background Essay)”. The main cause of the Civil War was slavery, which was a huge controversy between the North and South.
The United States Constitution was established to provide basic rights and a government for the people. Much blood was shed, along with many casualties in the American Revolution to insure Americans could implement the policies and powers of the Constitution. In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States; however, his political views on slavery were not welcomed in the South. Consequently, Lincoln’s election sparked panic for the South knowing that he would undermine slavery. In order to insure that slavery continued, Southern states attempted to make two Constitutional provisions; consequently, they were denied.
During the American Civil War, from 1861 through 1865, eleven Southern States seceded and left the Union. The Union, in the North, consisted of twenty states who remained loyal. The Confederacy, in the South, included eleven states that seceded. Over the next four years, the South and the North would be divided by many different issues that would have a significant impact on America, its people, and its history. The Southern states decided to secede for many reasons.
Since the beginning, the institution of slavery which would keep African Americans chained was bound to cause problematic for America as a whole. The controversy of African Americans were the initial reason that the Civil War even began, and they greatly shaped the course of the war through their efforts fighting for the Union which the government could not deny, they became the main reason for the war, and paved the way to the beginning of African Americans being able to grasp rights along with the hardships socially. In the years right before the Civil War began, there was growing tension between Northern and Southern states over the issue of slavery. It snapped shortly after Abraham Lincoln, who openly frowned upon slavery, won the election
America endured blood-stained fields and constant death during its bloodiest four years in the Civil War. Brother fighting against brother, the North and the South participated in a gruesome war. Despite that the war was largely based around the controversial issue of slavery, African Americans were unable to participate; the fighting was left in the hands of white men. For the first half of the war, only white men were granted permission to enlist. The Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln in January of 1863 allowed African Americans to be able to participate in the Civil War and fight for the United States Army.
The two out four questions that I choose are to 1.) Discuss the causes of the civil war. Cite as many facts as possible to back up your analysis. And answer 2.) If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the goal of the president Lincoln was to unite the North and the South. His main goal was not to abolish slavery. According to the Emancipation Proclamation, he stated, “…all persons held as slaves within any state, or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free…” This statement indicates that if the South had not been against the North, they could have retained their slaves. The decision that Lincoln issued might be a compulsive way to suppress the South, but if Southerners wanted to retain slavery, they should have followed the North rather than fighting.
The war was devastating hopes of the poor people at home. The war was sending family members to war to fight and die in war. They seen whites and people on tv together but couldn’t be in the same schools together. But, the whites couldn’t live on the same streets as the blacks did. The blacks think that molotovs and rifles could solve all of their problems when they really can’t.
When a story aligns itself so deliberately with real individuals from history and strongly claims to have rights of representation of events on lands where they actually took place in the way Gettysburg chose to do from the very beginning of the film, it automatically takes responsibility for accuracy. Leaving out the important portrayals of how life was for the Confederate and Union Armies by failing to fill in the background makes the Confederates meeting the criteria of passive racists by simply applying slurs when in fact the invasion of Virginia opened up opportunities for their actively aggressive racism and physical oppression of all African-Americans of Gettysburg. By having the only African-American in the film be featured as an escaped prisoner whose only salvation was provided by the Federal Army dismisses the background role of African-Americans throughout the entire war as cooks, tailors, and construction workers. The story is told strictly from the perspective of the important people during the Battle of Gettysburg but did not accurately portray the community and daily life of the Civil War, the decisions of those in command affected citizens in Gettysburg at the time. We see this occurrence in other events described in modern-day history, including the portrayal of Napoleon, Alexander The Great, Julius Caesar, and Christopher Columbus.
The Civil War is characterized as the bloodiest war in American History. From 1861 to 1865, the North and South fought over several of disagreements and encounters. The Civil War caused hundreds and thousands of men to lose their life, about 620,000 soldiers had died. The Civil War was fought in Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, and Florida. Civil War began because the North wanted to abolish slavery, the South seceded from the Union, and the North overpowered the South.
