One Sport, Two Completely Different Games One might think that the level at which a game is played makes no difference on how the game is played. The list of differences between the NFL and NCAA football, however, goes on and on. Most differences are due to variations of rules, but are not limited to this, as differences are also sprung from off of the field. Free time and how players use it, preparations, rules, styles, and so much more vary between the NFL and NCAA. Due to the different rules, abilities of players, and coaching styles, many people would say that they find college football more interesting or more exciting to watch and after watching both college football and NFL football, it is a hard point to argue. Most teams from pee-wee football through college football rarely go under-center or out of the "I" formation, but more out of a spread formation with all receivers and backs spread out wide. Playing this style of football from pee-wee to college only prepares players to play the college game and not the NFL game which results in players who are "better at playing college football than NFL players are at playing NFL football" (Kilgore). College football is changing and adding new ideas, formations and plays. But the NFL is reluctant to change, and blames college for ridding NFL-ready quarterbacks and lineman because in college they are used to fast paced spread offenses and not the slower under center and I formations in the NFL. The flow of information has flipped from going downward – from the NFL to college then to high school and so on – to upward where it goes from high school to college and Tony Franklin thinks that if the NFL is smart, they will use some of that too. And, a few teams have borrowed some formations or plays. The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, and New England Patriots have all started to use some concepts of college football, like shovel passes and read options, but not whole schemes (Kilgore).
