It is very important to know and understand the people that changed and shaped the way we live today. As we look back at the past we realize that they were all mostly fighting for the same things; freedom and equality. Two figures that come to mind when I think of leaders that revolutionized the way we live and think are Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. Two of the most influential leaders that brought about change. They both led their people to what was right and they have both inspired many to keep on fighting. To begin with, Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta in January 15, 1929. He was born to Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King who tried to keep their children protected from the racism that existed but there was only so much they could do. His birth name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born in Porbandar, India to the chief minister; his mother was completely absorbed in religion therefore he was raised with strong beliefs. He took vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance between people of other religions very seriously. As opposed to King, Gandhi wasn’t a particularly bright child. “He shone neither in the classroom nor in the playing field”. The plan was for him to follow his family tradition and hold high office which required him to become a barrister. For that it was necessary he took a trip to England to study. During his stay in England he struggled to adapt but remained true to his beliefs. He also spent some time in South Africa and there he realized that Indians were treated as less than human. At a farewell party, he became aware of a proposed bill that would make it impossible for Indians to vote. He changed overnight becoming a proficient political campaigner. Like King he was also attacked because of his fight for equal
