The Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are known for their immigration groups. They move out of their hometown for a purpose. One purpose is to restart their lives and find a job. Mostly both of them move to the United States of America. The United States is the homeland for immigrants, mainly because it is one of the greatest places to live in, because there’s more opportunities for jobs. Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are very much alike in why they came to the United States. Both the Puerto Ricans and Mexicans differ on how they got treated when they arrived in America. They also have a big difference in their cultures. Back in the 1900’s, Puerto Ricans couldn’t find a decent job in their homes. People kept looking and looking and kept finding …show more content…
In New York, there were gangs who discriminated the Puerto Ricans and determined to keep them away from their neighborhood. The gangs chased away any blacks or Puerto Ricans who wandered into the neighborhood. “The gang members, who were determined to keep their tidy ghetto off limits to outsiders” (Juan Gonzales 87). This quote talks about how the Puerto Ricans were treated when they move to the united states. The gangs were put to a stop when socialist Vito Marcantonio was put in congressman in New York. Later when he lost the election, gangs started to jump on the Puerto Ricans and others and started beating them brutally. Mexicans on the other hand were treated a little different than the Puerto Ricans. When they arrived to the united states they were being treated bad. They were being killed and hung. Lynching of Mexicans started on the 1900’s to scare of other Mexicans from entering South Texas. The cause for this disaster was because Americans thought they were no use to them. They didn’t know how to read and write. They weren’t really that educated back then so the only way for them not to come to the united states is to kill them. They were no use to the Americans. As a Puerto Rican citizen, I do not fit in to that part of our history very much. In the late 1800’s, Puerto Rico was not a U.S. territory; instead, it formed part of the Spanish empire. It wasn’t until the end of the Spanish-American war that Puerto Rico became a U.S. property. Even then (after being conquered by the U.S. in the year 1900), the common American belief was that Puerto Ricans weren’t inherently equal any more than they thought that blacks were racially equal to whites. Rather, because the American public wouldn’t consent to treating Puerto Ricans as equals or granting them citizenship, the U.S. had trouble keeping the island as an imperial possession.
I was raised with many of the same cultural beliefs that were instilled in my parents as they grew up (Kay, 2018). Family and close friends take priority and are extremely important (Kay, 2018). Respect and trust are paramount within the family unit (Kay, 2018). What is the normal family unit like? Family is a staple in the Puerto Rican Culture.
Puerto Rico and the United States The debate on whether or not Puerto Rico should become a US state has been going on since 1898, after the U.S. defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war. Factors such as the country's relationship, how it might benefit the United States, and our laws, all affect the outcome. This is a complex topic, and there are many sides to it. There are numerous different opinions that people have, both in the United States and in Puerto Rico. “In November 2020, 53 percent of Puerto Ricans voted in favor of becoming a U.S. state” (“Could” 1).
Mexican-Americans were hated by the White Americans. Over the years of racial tension between the White and Mexican Americans the tension
The history of Puerto Rico is one that has been passed down from generation to generation. This island home and its residents are proud of who they are, and how far they have come. Puerto Rico is known for its abundant history and culture. It even used to be known as San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist) before the Spaindards discovered the surplus of gold in the rivers.

In the 16th Century, Spain became one of the European forces to reckon with. To expand even further globally, Spanish conquistadors were sent abroad to discover lands, riches, and North America and its civilizations. When the Spanish and Native American groups met one another, they judged each other, as they were both unfamiliar with the people that stood before them. The Native American and Spanish views and opinions of one another are more similar than different because when meeting and getting to know each other, neither the Spaniards nor the Native Americans saw the other group of people as human. Both groups of people thought of one another as barbaric monsters and were confused and amazed by each other’s cultures.
The island has been a territory ever since. The people of Puerto Rico are natural born US citizens and are governed by a constitution. It is the most populated of all US territories. Its form of currency is the US dollar and has a population of 3.548 million. Reasons Puerto Rico might not become a state is because 41% of its people live in poverty.
The status of Puerto Rico as a United States territory places the residents in a figurative state of limbo, and the United States should do something to make a change. Puerto Rico has barely experienced any independence throughout their years as a country, colony, and later a territory. The small island was once a colony of Spain, along with its neighbor

The only reason this occurred was because World War I was beginning. The U.S. government needed troops to send down to defend the Panama Canal and they felt that whites weren’t suited to fight in tropical climates. Instead they labeled puerto rican citizens as “immunes” due to them being
When comparing the Southwest indians to the Eastern Woodlands indians I found there were some differences, in their homes, the indians in the Southwest had hut like homes made of stone or adobe while indians in the Eastern Woodlands had lodge like homes made from wood. Farming and hunting seemed to be big for the Eastern Woodlands, but most of the Southwest people were just gatherers and hunters when they could be, although there were some successful farmers. Both areas had hostile groups of people, but the two groups in the Southwest later became more settled and peaceful. The Eastern Woodlands and the Great Plains had a few differences, again their homes being one of them.
Mexico and Cuba underwent major revolutions led by rebels who opposed their current presidents. The revolutionaries in both countries were mainly concerned with the industrialization and modernization that was occurring within their countries. The uprisings resulted in the countries shared beliefs against foreign imperialism, against elites having so much control on their counties and push for land reforms. In the long run Mexico faired better after their revolution than Cuba. Cuba still experiences hostile tensions with the U.S. today and still practices rationing.
