Courageous Character Courage means when you are able to do something or stand up for someone or something, despite when people say that you shouldn't do it, or when you know there will be consequences for doing the right thing. Throughout the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses the young Cassie Logan as an example of a young girl with courage, strength, and stands up for her beliefs and her family no matter what gets in her way. Cassie proved she was courageous and brave because she stood up for her brother, Little Man, when he didn't want a dirty book and had to be “switched” so Cassie got “switched” with him. Also she showed she was willing to face the consequences for helping her family and friends when she stood up to Mr. Burnett at the store after he wouldnt take TJ’s order. Cassie hated Lillian Jean and she had to find out a way to ‘shake’ her. Cassie made a plan. She became ‘best’ friends with Lillian by carrying her stuff, being ‘nice’ to her, doing her favors, walking with her, and calling her ‘Miz’. Lillian was convinced Cassie was her friend. Cassie brought her into the forest saying she had a surprise for her, and dropped Lillian’s books. She wondered why Cassie did that. Cassie told her off, beat her up, and made her apologize for everything. Cassie said “Just one person and everybody at Jefferson Davis is gonna know who you crazy ‘bout and all your other business...and you know I know. Besides, if anybody ever did find out ‘bout this fight, you’d be laughed clear up to Jackson. You here going on thirteen, getting beat up by a nine-year-old.”

The novel Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is a heart wrenching story about an African American family going through very difficult times. Through many twists and turns racism, the Logan children learn what it's like in the cruel world outside their protected farmland. By sticking together as a family, Taylor shows how important a strong family relationship is. Had they not stuck together during these times they may not have made it through. In the end Mildred shows how when everyone works together, obstacles could be overcome.

Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.
