Throughout history there have always been people who wanted to take law and justice in their own hands. The first, so called, vigilantes can be found in the bible, but the most relevant cases of vigilantism happened way later and emerged as a frontier response to the threat and reality of crime. The first of many more incidents to come is set in the backwoods of South Carolina in 1767. 'The Regulators ', as they called themselves, made a two-year campaign to suppress banditry that successfully reestablished law and order. Later on, several more vigilante movements rose from 1863 to 1884, which caused over 60 people to be put to death.
