Poe’s Death The circumstances surrounding the death of the famous author Edgar Allan Poe have been debated by historians, professors and literature fans for years. Although there are limited amounts of facts and evidence from the days before his death, various theories have been presented and argued about how Poe died. Although one theory suggests that Poe died from rabies, the more compelling and believable theory is he died from alcoholism.
One possible theory that has been suggested is that Poe’s death was caused by rabies; however, when looked at closely, this theory is not valid. For example, in “Poe’s Death Is Rewritten As Case Of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” the article talks about how “there is no evidence that a rabid animal had

In the killing the narrators explains that the eye of the old man is the reason why he killed him in the first place .The description of the old man’s “eye of a vulture- a pale blue eye, with an film over it. Whatever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees”(1). The senses of the narrator helps to bring on the mood of menace into the story.
The death seems to connect to cooping because he was found unconscious next to a polling station on election day in Baltimore. Edgar Allan Poe's death is clearly shown by the Cooping theory. Due to the corrupt and violent elections in Baltimore cooping is an obvious theory. Poe was found in different clothing and was found in a gutter. Cooping is when gangs kidnap innocent bystanders to vote for their preferred candidate; the gangs will go to the
Benitez backs his rabies theory up with irrefutable scientific evidence, also Pollin and Benedetto try to disprove the scientific evidence provided by Dr. Benitez with false information that portrays them as unreliable sources. This all seems to point to the idea that Poe died of rabies. With all of this evidence pointing towards Poe dying of rabies, it is very likely that this was the cause of his death, but nobody can know for sure, which seems fitting for the man who is responsible for every fright a scary movie will ever give you. This is why he is widely regarded as the father of the horror

Poe 's Cause of Death Edgar Allen Poe 's death has been the topic of discussion for many historians and scholars for many years. The reason for his demise has been unsolved, because of the many different sources explaining his death. The reasons people believe Poe died from rabies is because in one of the letters Dr. Benitez says “Poe refused alcohol and could drink water only with great difficulty, rabies victims exhibit hydrophobia”. If Poe had been drinking he would have taken the alcohol, this shows he may have had something else. Another thing that Dr. Benitez said was “there was no evidence of a bite but some rabies victims don’t remember being bitten”. This shows that he could have been bitten a long time ago and couldn’t remember.

Dr. Benitez even admits the faults in his theory, “Lack of evidence of a bite or scratch. In those days rabies was known as to causes and symptoms, including itching and other sensations that could affect an entire limb or side of the body. . . Catrina [Poe’s pet cat], who, uninfected and and showing no signs of rabies” (qtd. In Pollin and Benedetto 189).
