These assessments can be time consuming and difficult to administer. Any screening tool or assessment for elder abuse and neglect needs to be completed in private without the caregiver’s involvement. The Elder Abuse Suspicion Index tool is a six item questionnaire that can be administered by any health professional in an office setting and usually takes about two-three minutes to complete. The Indicator of Abuse Screening Tool is a twenty-nine item assessment that requires a two to three home visit by a healthcare professional. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (2016), forty percent of adults, ages sixty-five and older, drink alcohol and this can complicate common health problems older adults already face such as diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver problems and mood or memory disorders. Alcohol consumption or other substance use can predispose patients to dangerous interaction with certain medications. Effects of a substance abuse disorder can easily be misinterpreted as signs and symptoms of physical and emotional abuse and often lead to issues with self-neglect. Medical Complication- Diabetes In a study conducted by Ramsey, Engler, Harrington, Smith, Fagan, Stein and Friedmann (2010), it was proven that the consumption of alcohol negatively impacts a person’s self-care behaviors. Alcohol decreases the person’s motivation for taking medications, maintaining a proper diet, monitoring glucose levels and performing regular exercise. It is important to educate patient’s on the need to avoid or limit alcohol to prevent issues with medication and diet compliance, reinforcing the need for glucose control to prevent complications, disabilities
Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
“That was the worst phone call I got in my entire life. Awful,” Nalon Burch’s mother said. “It’s a very difficult position to be in.” "Elder abuse is a terrible but preventable problem," ODJFS Director Cynthia C. Dungey said in a news release. "It affects all socioeconomic classes, races and genders. The more we spread the word about how to recognize and report it, the easier it will be to stop it from occurring and to make sure our older friends and family members get the help they need and the care they deserve." ODJFS supervises the state 's Adult Protective Services program, which helps vulnerable adults age 60 and older who are in danger of harm, are unable to protect themselves and may have no one to assist
abuse: When the service user lives with the carer, it may increase the chances for abuse to occur as this situation may cause stress and resentment if the carer feels he/she cannot cope. Not properly trained staff who do not receive any supervision or support at work, as well as stressed staff who are going through personal problems, or who do not like working in the care sector, may increase the risk of an individual being abused. In addition, patients who are not mobile, are confused, suffer from dementia or are aggressive or challenging, may also present an increase for the risk of an individual being abused, since the carer

By the end of Confronting Elderly Abuse in America, I was crying and upset. I felt so bad for the victims, and I couldn’t believe that so many people could hurt the elderly. I believe the state stated in the documentary was that nearly 90% are abused by someone they know. It’s devastating to know that those being abused put so much trust in the ones they love without knowing their loved ones are abusing their power. Although, the majority of elderly abuse cases are caused by a loved one or caregiver there are those cases that person abused was picked at random like husband’s grandma.
Elder abuse is the mistreatment or maltreatment of the elderly, includes sexual, physical, psychological abuse, self-neglect, caregiver neglect and financial exploitation. Studies show that between 820,000 and over four million incidents of elder abuse occur every year (American Psychology Association, 2014). Studies have shown that abuse victims have an earlier mortality, then elders who are not abused victims (American Psychology Association, 2014). There are a variety of scams that target the elderly, home repair contractors, utility department employees, home health employees who have exploited vulnerable older individuals. Family members also abuse the elderly examples are decubitus ulcers, financial exploitation and malnutrition.
Customers want to accumulate cash by buying inexpensive leisure at the store like liquor and electronics. Customers are also trying to put aside money by not leaving and racking up big expenses at a bistro and as an alternative just going to the store. Alcohol is surviving the trade and industry delay well, matched up to to other classes that may be well thought-out, non-judgmental or not needed to a lot of patrons, intoxicating drinks are a reasonably priced treat. Elder abuse does not possess the momentum in present time like that of child abuse as seen in both federal and Arizona state law. As such the definition of abuse remains standardized across both entities in forms of physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, or exploitation. The Arizona Attorney General (n.d.) characterizes a majority of victims as 75 years of age and up, two-thirds are female, possessing one or more physical or mental impairments, widowed or divorced and socially isolated, and usually live with the abuser. These characteristics are often associated to leading factors of vulnerability found in elderly individuals and ultimately can become victim to abuse or exploitation. In 2016, the state of Arizona investigated 7,596 cases of

Factors leading to the abuse includes gender, lack of caregiving experience, physical health, dependency, social isolation of caregivers, and health problems. The victim was an old woman of 79 years old. The perpetrator did not have experience as a caregiver.
Patient Abuse One of the most sensitive issues in health care is patient mishandling or abuse. Mishandling is the maltreatment and negligence of a person under medical organizations or at home. Some of the many types of ill-treatment include but not limited to physical, mental, curative and monetary abuse. According to the USA Today review, more than 5000 assisted living facilities were hazards for the elderly while they should be safe places for them. The report conducted between 2000 and 2002 found that there were significant medication errors as well as poor staffing (training).
Motivational Strategies Paper 1) Yes little is known about alcohol abuse with older adults. It is a serious problem also. Two thirds of older adults who have a drinking problem while they were younger experience alcohol difficulties when they are in their 60's. Other older adults start drinking after age 50.
A new definition will take into consideration the notion of a trusting relationship in which the trust of the older victim is violated. Violations of trust are classified in one of the following areas: (1) Neglect of a responsible caretaker in meeting: (a) Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as eating, bathing, toileting, and dressing; (b) Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) such as managing finances, handling transportation (driving or navigating public transit), shopping, preparing meals, using the telephone, and other communication devices, managing medications, housework and basic home maintenance; (2) Financial exploitation; (3) Psychological (emotional or verbal abuse) and Physical Abuse (including sexual abuse). The Academy estimates that 1 in 14 cases of abuse make it to the authority’s attention. Common Definitions of Abuse The common definition of elder abuse is provided by the National Center on Elder Abuse: “Elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult.”
