Women’s History Month Biography

Eleanor Roosevelt was known as a controversial first lady. She was a confident, outspoken feminist and humanitarian who made history and inspired many minorities. She advocated for expanded roles for women in their workplace, the civil rights of African Americans and Asian Americans, and the rights of World War II refugees. Yet, Eleanor Roosevelt’s life was not as happy as it seemed.
Early Life

Instead, she was instructed by private tutors till the age of 15. She then studied at Allenswood in England, England, where she was instructed from 1899 to 1902. At age 18, Eleanor returned to New York with a brand new sense of confidence. Also becoming involved in social service work, Eleanor joined the Junior League and taught at the Rivington Street Settlement House.
In 1905, Eleanor Roosevelt married her 5th cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt. Together, Eleanor and Franklin had six children. One thing Eleanor was very passionate about was her religion. She was a faithful cradle member of the Episcopal Church. Eleanor Roosevelt received 48 honorary awards in her lifetime. Her first award, the Doctor of Humane Letters on June 13, 1929, was also the first honorary degree awarded by Russell Sage College. Eleanor Roosevelt was also nominated 3 times for the Nobel Peace Prize between 1947 and 1955 and was awarded one of the United Nations Human Rights Prizes.
