In the world of American literature, Emily Dickinson is looked up to as one of the most renowned American authors of time. Instead of writing poetry in the familiar style and form of the olden days, she chose to write with different types of poetry forms and syntaxes. Because of that, many people recognize her for have opened a new path of poetry heading towards the twentieth century. However, she was not known and praised for her works until after her death. On December 10th 1830, Emily Dickinson was born as the second child of the three Dickinson children. She relied and had close relationships with both her older and younger siblings. The Dickinson family were already a well-known family in society. They played a significant role by have founded many of the educational institutes and helped with the developments of Amherst. Their house, the Homestead, was used for a meeting place when having important guests. Later on, because of Edward Dickinson’s political career, a house on North Pleasant Street became their new home. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 to a family of conservative Calvinists on their Amherst Homestead in Massachusetts. She spent her younger childhood reading, busy with school, and exploring nature and her love of the earth. When she was old enough, she attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, but only for a year. “Emily Dickinson Biography”, on Biography.com, states that agoraphobia, anxiety, and depression kept her out of school often, leading to quitting school despite being an exemplary student. From this time on she lived with her mother, taking care of her as she grew ill, never marrying or having children.
Emily Dickinson was an original teenager who became a famous American poet in the 19th century. Her early impact involved the principal of Amherst Academy, Leonard Humphrey, and Benjamin Franklin Newton, who sent her a book of poetry. Throughout her life, she been writing poetry from ripped pieces of paper, to the back of an envelope. Overtime, she became very popular because of her leftover poetry that was handed over from her sister after her death. In the 1930’s, as many of us may know, this was around the time of the Lost Generation and flappers who changed the country’s idea of acceptable morals. The south, being religious, it is common for many families to want their children to stay away from this form of corruption and stick to the idea of marrying and creating a family in God’s light. In most religious communities, then and now, it is almost taboo for a woman to be single or to be without children, through marriage of course, by the age of 30. This fear is what caused Emily to become assertive in her endeavors with both her father and Homer. You don 't hear of any other family members that had a strong influence in her life.
First off, she came from a well-known, upper class family. That is why the townspeople didn’t believe that Emily would date Homer, they thought she was to good for him. They state, “Of course a Grierson would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer” (454). Emily was held to an extremely high position in their town. When she died, “our whole town went to her funeral, the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument” (451).

His principal recalled her as a very intelligent and excellent academic of consummate deportment who was faithful in all school duties. She spent a few terms off due to illness. The longest off was of one year when she was enrolled for eleven weeks. She enjoyed her strenuous studies writing to friends that the Academy was a better place to study.

It is clear that in her era, Miss Emily was seen as traditional American Southern women, who lived to become an inferior women to man but was later a burden to her society. She was a lady who was secluded from society, lived a psychopathic life, which at the end, and was no secret for the town’s people. While Miss Emily was alive, she lived in a secluded home of a single father, thus leading her to be dependent upon him. She did not have much of a socially engaged life, for her father drove men away. When he finally died, Miss Emily told the townspeople that he was not dead, and finally, on the third day, let the town’s people buried him (William Faulkner 1105).

She was well known throughout the town and that’s why that quote was mentioned in the story when Faulkner was talking about her funeral. “Now she too would know the old thrill and the old despair of a penny more or less.” This quote is said in the story after it mentions that her father passed away.
She went to school, where she was an excellent student, until she was 18. She then dropped out and lived her life at home. Emily lived at home, with her sister, for many years and took care of her parents until their deaths. After both of her parents’ deaths Emily stayed home very often, and is thought by most scholars to have had depression and/or other mental illnesses. It was during this time she got most of her writing and poetry done.
