Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was an American poet, only recognized until after she passed. Dickinson is known for her bold original verse. Emily wrote almost 1,800 poems in her lifetime, and wrote, like most writers do, about what she knew and about what intrigued her as a person. In her poems, she wrote on many universal themes such as death, immortality, religion, and nature. Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of the biggest influences on Emily’s works, and writing style, even though they came from two different time periods. Emily redefined American poetry with unique line breaks and unexpected rhymes. She also became very obsessed with death after losing a few close people at the early stage of her life. She was the very religious type who believed in the inevitability of death and afterlife. Emily was skeptical and curious of the idea of death. Which is very ironic with the idea of Emily’s poems only being published until after her death, and if it wasn't for her sister, they wouldn't be published at all. Death haunted Emily her whole life all while she simultaneously tried to overcome it. As said before, Emily has written over 500 pieces of art about the idea of death which can contribute to the thought that Emily was indeed obsessed with death. This thought can be justified by the fact of Emily losing a few people at a very early age from an accident. As many people would once you lose someone close, she turned quiet, and alienated herself from the world. She drove herself into her poetry as it was the only way she could escape reality. She was closed out from the world. There is no doubt that she wrote as many poems as she did due to the fact of healing from a loss. Emily was a major introvert but loved the idea of nature. She was a thanatologist - a person who studies death and dying. She studied the idea of death in every possible way you could think of. Although only recognized until after her death, she is forever remembered as one of America's greatest poets. Emily’s philosophy is mainly distributed through the story of her life. She wrote on things that truly interested her and what she knew to be true. These thoughts can be justified by her religion, and many of her life's obstacles. Emily was encouraged and influenced by a few of earlier time poets, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph was a big contributing factor to Emily’s afterlife career. He was a big help to Emily’s structure of her writing, including the techniques of unique line breaks and unexpected rhythm. Emily’s life was full of great things, but unfortunately was also filled with the death of close ones. The cycle of life affected Emily and her ideas that she put towards her poetry.
