Entertainment of the Elizabethan Era Today children and adults can entertain themselves at the click of a button on televisions, phones, and computers. The technology of today was not available during the Elizabethan Era. The entertainment choices also changed according to one’s financial status. Compared to the lower class, the wealthy had many more opportunities. Due to the lack of modern technology, the upper class of the Elizabethan Era spent their free time playing cards, hosting meals, dancing, going to festivals, participating in tournaments, hunting, and other activities. Dancing was known as the most popular way to meet people during the Elizabethan Era (Cartwright). Music is what brought everyone together, but you didn’t have dances without music. Dancing was something you could do inside and outside, Cartwright argued that dancing was fun, and also seen as a great way to exercise. When people came together to dance there were two most common styles of dances, the easy go with the flow type of dancing and the traditional English style (Alchin). Alchin stated that there were also many dances that were adopted from Italy, such as ballet, The Volt, and The Galliard. Usually the upper class were the only ones who used the dances imported from other countries (Alchin). These dances were brought back by merchants and nobles who had traveled to other countries and took in some of their culture. Elizabethans took their dancing very seriously, especially the upper class and royalty. They created step by step manuals with directions on how specific dances go. These manuals were exported all over England. A very simple but traditional dance in the Elizabethan era usually required two people. The pair usually consisted of one male and one female (Cartwright). The pairs would be in a big line across from each other or in a giant circle. You could find these tournaments during festivals and at other big events (Cartwright). The most common tournament events were those centered around battle including jousting, fencing, and archery (Cartwright). They wore clothing that was formerly used in warfare such as metal armor, Cartwright stated that metal armor was no longer used in battle when gunpowder became an effective weapon. However, they liked to wear it for show during tournaments and competitions (Cartwright). Your fancy armor and skills reflected your reputation (Cartwright). Cartwright argued that when individuals would fence or joust, they would dull the weapons down, but if not careful those weapons would still be able to cause serious injury. Carttwright stated that while jousting, you would wear metal armor and in fencing you would only have a padded jacket. In fencing matches they would often use two types of shields, the Buckler which was a circular shield and the Target which was a square shield (Cartwright). Another weapon they used was the rapier which was similar to a sword (Cartwright). The final activity in the Tournaments was archery, Cartwright argued that out of all three events in the Tournaments, archery was the most popular. During the Elizabethan Era, a big part of the citizen’s culture was sports. These sports were mainly for the nobility and upper class, who spent many of their days watching and performing them. They were a source of great fun and entertainment, and are also considered an essential part of Elizabethan Era life. Three of the most popular and common sports were fencing, hunting, and tennis. These sports brought pleasure and amusement to the people of Elizabethan Era.
In the Elizabethan Era, many different foods and drinks were consumed. Some of the food you ate depended on how much money you had, and where you lived. There were also time periods where everyone would eat at the same time. First of all, drinking was a very important part of the Elizabethan culture, with alcohol widely consumed at all levels of society. Ale was the most popular drink that was dranken.
“In Shakespeare's time acting was a profession only open to boys and men” (Globe Education, Actors). During this time period women were not allowed to act in performances so men played all the girl parts in a show. Along with the actors came the audience. The audience during the Elizabethan Era was much different from today’s audiences. “The audience went to the theatre to be seen and admired, dressed in their best clothes… these people were not necessarily well behaved.
1920s Dance Through the years, the style of dance has significantly changed from something intimate to more individual. With the introduction of more “vulgar” dance moves, the generation gap is wide. Traditional dances like the Waltz remained popular, but with younger people adding their own style to the traditional dances, a new generation of dance was formed. Dancers swayed, hugged, and hopped to the new rhythms of ragtime. Close dancing became a social norm through the Waltz and Tango, because they were considered scandalous, involving physical contact between partners.
To dance is to be knowledgeable about the stories of the ancestral heroes. Dancing, unlike painting and singing, is learnt at an early age. This allows large groups of people to demonstrate their clan rights in front of an audience. Dance is also seen as an occasion to entertain and to be entertained and through the work of dance to show their love for families and kin. It is for this reason that dance may be performed at the end of every day in some communities.
As of many warriors, They usually wear armor and train hard and strictly for war, an example of two warriors, were the Samurai and the Knights. Richard Ramirez once stated, “Violent delights tend to have violent endings.” Sports were very different at this time, a lot of violence was shown between different games, such as animal blood sports which were very serious. Athletic competitions have been around since the beginning of time. Popular sports in the Elizabethan Era were the animal blood sports which involved bears, bulls, cocks and dogs. People during the Elizabethan era may have liked the blood sports, but they always had violent endings.

A lot of procedures, processes and aspects, such as the social hierarchy, structure of the government, political climate and so much more, have changed during the five centuries of development. Here are some of the aspects in which the Elizabethan Era and the Modern England differ.
