Entertainment was brought to a whole new level in the 1920's. Many traditions were changed and history was made. The 1920’s were the beginning of radios, talkies, and the fame for many athletes and African American sports teams.
Both the invention of the telephone and telegraph lead to the ground breaking invention of the radio. Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, was the first to discover radio waves. In addition he discovered, developed, and sold the first long-distance telegraph. Resulting from his discoveries, the distance across oceans and between borders became smaller. The sending of data became faster and many lives were saved. For example the surviving passengers of the titanic were able to be rescued because of Marconi’s inventions. Among Marconi’s inventions the radio surely brought him the most fame. When the radio was first presented to the market few people were interested because of the lack of radio receivers. After the idea of the radio was spread radio receivers were built. Many hearts were filled with joy and excited as fans watched Babe Ruth win the American League Pennant three years in a row and the World Series twice. However, excluded from professional baseball, African Americans started a baseball league of their own called the Negro National League. The NNL became the first ever black baseball league. It was founded by Rube Foster "The father of Black Baseball”. In 1923 over 400,000 African American fans turned out to watch the star players "Smokey Joe" Williams and "Bullet" Joe Rogan. Though society ignored black baseball players, they became very popular in the black community. The interest in celebrity baseball players also grew greatly.
