During most of high school, I suffered severely from depression, which led to self harm and suicidal thoughts. Throughout this experience, I was the girl who was “popular” and had everything I wanted. My life seemed perfect, how could I hate it? The select few people who knew what I was going through did everything in their power to heal me, and without their kindness I do not know if I would be alive. You never know what someone is going through, no matter how perfect their life seems from the outside, and during my times of need, kindness from someone who cares made all the difference. Addressing the challenge of depression is and was complex, but the network of support I had was everything. Ultimately, I have learned to always be considerate of the lens through which someone sees the world- and consider what they have experienced to develop that point of view. This includes listening to and advocating for patients, as well as being the vital link between patients and doctors. My experience working in customer service, as well as my life experience as a friend, has tailored my ability to effectively communicate with others in a way that is respectful and honest.
