A dye is a coloured substance that has an affinity, a bond with a physical surface, to the substrate to which it is being applied. Dyes are usually soluble in water. Dyes are used to change the perceived colour of an object. Dyes consist of 2 main parts: chromohore and auxochrome. Before 1856, all dyes were obtained from natural resources. The first synthetic dye, Mauveine, was accidentally discovered by William Henry Perkin in 1856 while he was looking for a cure for malaria. Different dyes are made of different dye molecules. Dyes have colour because they absorb light in the visible spectrum (400–700 nm), have at least one chromophore, have a conjugated system (a structure with alternating double and single bonds), and exhibit resonance …show more content…
The Romans used Indigo as a pigment for painting, medical and cosmetic purposes. Indigo was considered a luxury item due to the natural process of extracting it, therefore making it expensive. Indigo was an important aspect of many of West African traditions. Clothes dyed with Indigo usually signified wealth and were only available to people from wealthy families. In Japan, during the Edo period when it was forbidden to use silk, the Japanese began to import and plant cotton; indigo was the only dye that was able to be used for cotton fiber. In the modern world much of the need for indigo is being met with other types of blue dyes. Most of the indigo produced is synthetic indigo. The main use for indigo dye is for cotton yarn to produce blue jeans. Small amounts of indigo dye are used for dyeing wool and silk. Indigo also has been used as a treatment for a range of ills including scorpion bites and ovarian and stomach cancer. Colorblindness in the U.S. seems like it would create a very fair and just society and treat everyone equal. I think it would be both beneficial and detrimental. It would be beneficial because it would eliminate the people that actually do treat the dominant group higher than the minority, but it would detrimental because it create too much of a equal society. There needs to be people that excel over other people because it benefits everyone even when a white person excels over a black person. For example, if a white person and a black person are the last two options for a job position, and the white person gets the job, some people are going to overreact about it and say that the employer chose that person just because they were white, when in reality, that person was just more qualified.

“The Colors of Water”, written by James Mcbride, was published in 1996 by Riverheads Books. Even before McBride created the Color of Water, which was considered his most popular piece, he wrote many other realistic novels concerning realism such as “The Good Lord Bird”, which shares a common theme with the Color of Water having to do with racial tension and personal identity. The Color of Water was recognized for its alternation between two periods in time. The settings takes place in New York, and James tells the story of Ruth’s life which begins in the 1920’s, being considered as the “roaring twenties” in the South. He later puts great emphasis on the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s which was during the Civil Rights Era.
Henna is the link that connects me to the land of my ancestors and my traditions. As a young girl in Kenya I can remember all the neighborhood girls gathering up in one house the day before Eid ; we would all eagerly wait for our turn to be Hennaed, we would discuss what outfits we were going to wear the next day and what sort of designs we wanted on our hands. The Henna artist never failed to impress us with her captivating talent, she would begin with a line and from that one line an intricate design composed of multiple flowers would appear. The Henna artist always amazed us with her level of patience and her ability to multitask, she would tattoo about 50 to 60 girls in one day while displaying a constant, pleasant countenance. Figure 1.2 shows that there are two energy manifold in dye molecules: the singlet (Sn) and triplet (Tn) states. The excited triplet states are long lived in comparison with the excited singlet sates. The internal conversion (transitions in between states of same multiplicity) and intersystem crossing (kST) reduce the quantum efficiency for fluorescence. Once the triplet state is populated, this may lead to further losses of dye molecules by internal triplet absorption as shown in figure 1.2. The triplet absorption cross section T
