Last night, Cook Connie carried so many buckets of water into the house that I asked her why she was doing that and she said that if I would promise not to tell anyone she would tell me. So I said I would not to tell anyone and she said that when father is out hunting, she planned to fill the big pot with water on the stove and throw you into it and boil you. But we will get dressed quickly and leave quietly, then go away together.” The two children got up, dressed themselves quickly, and snuck away. When the water in the pot was boiling, the cook went into the bedroom to fetch Charlie Pebbles so that she could throw him in. But when she came to the room and saw the empty beds she realised that both children were gone. This turn of events alarmed her because she knew that she would have to explain to the hunter. She decided that the children had to be found and brought back at

In the novel, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne faces humiliation after making a mistake, similar to how Monica Lewinsky spoke of her experience with shame during her Ted Talk: “The Price of Shame”. Hester and Lewinsky show drastic changes in their behaviors after they are shamed, explaining the true cost of shame. A common theme seen throughout the novel and the Ted Talk is how humanity thrives on public humiliation, whether it be on the scaffold or on the internet. Both Hester and Lewinsky, explain and attempt to get their audiences to understand that mistakes do not define the individual. Although Hester and Lewinsky made mistakes, things people do and say still have a great impact on how others feel.
Issues/Problem Many of Engstrom Auto Mirror plant’s struggles during the recent economic downturn are clearly the cause of problems implementing the Scanlon plan. The first fundamental problem is the complicated formula that the Scanlon plan uses to determine an individual’s bonus based off of the company’s results, which remains confusing and vexing to employees. The bonuses paid out by the company also do not reflect individual productivity, as each employee takes home the same check regardless of the amount of effort shown. In addition, the way these bonuses were doled out over many years caused many of the workers to assume that they were simply a part of their salary, not expecting them to vanish when tough times hit the company.
One famous quote by David Nicholls is, “If you have to keep a secret it's because you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.” What this really means, is if something you’re doing is kept a secret, it’s probably at best looked down upon, and at worst, thrown in jail or killed. Even though secrets may seem mysterious and exciting at first, the consequences can have a long lasting negative effect. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the secret of the love between the two characters was ultimately the reason they died a sad and untimely death. Today, secrets can still create dangerous consequences and completely change one’s life as can be seen in the article, “‘Open Secret’:
In the story “The Scarlet Letter,” the author uses mirror as a device to exposes the truth by reflecting on the characters through characterization, mood, setting and theme. An individual cannot completely hide his or her sin when looking through a mirror. Hawthorne uses the mirror reflection to create a sense of piercing into a character’s thought thus revealing to the reader its purpose- to expose the truth- setting up a stage to carry on its mood, setting and deliver themes. Mirror characterizes characters and reveals to them the truth through the reflection of its image. While Hester was standing on the scaffold, “she saw her own face, glowing with girlish beauty, and illuminating all the interior of the dusky mirror in which she had been
Ignoring problems only lets them get worse until they seem impossible to overcome. That is an idea from the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Fahrenheit 451 America has become a nation that has banned books; the story is of a lifelong citizen, Guy Montag finding his way out of the superficiality the nation is enveloped with. This superficiality is enabled by one thing that the nation provides people with. Escapism, which hinders the pursuit of true freedom and happiness.
Firemen searched the building searching if their was any evidence on how the fire was started and discovered something even more important. They figured out that during the fire the doors were locked which prevented the girls to get out of the building. “... we never went out the front door. We always went one by one out the back. There was a man there searching, because the people were afraid we would take something, so that door was always locked” (Leap for Life, Leap for Death).
We all have values and ethics coming from our culture. In fact, our culture and education are the most important sources of our values and ethics. Education is the primary factor that will construct the way an individual later think and culture is the primary influence on our values and customs. “The Shattered Mirror” by Kwame Anthony Appiah discusses the life of Richard Burton, a famous adventurer from the time of Victorian England, to prove his point that across the world there are hundreds of different cultures which all share a part of truth but that none of these cultures will be able to unite on a single set of values. Thus, Appiah argues to understand if “a common value system which would unify the world” can exist despite all the differences
Throughout history many nations in many places would hunt for invisible enemies, threats so great that even the government itself couldn’t see them behind the shadows. Two of these hunts were in the United States, one being the Salem Witch Trials back when the US was just a meer colony, and then the Red Scare, where everyone was afraid of communists entering our ranks. In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” he wrote about such fears and event of the Red Scare, but through the lenses of the Salem Witch Trials. But later, in a almost strange twist of fate, began to mirror the actions one of the characters, this being an example of the mirror between fiction and reality. Arthur Miller’s actions during the Red Scare mirrors the actions of John Proctor
