The Boston Tea Party, an event that changed the future of the people in the American colonies. The Boston Tea Party was an important incident due to the Sons of Liberty, Daughters of Liberty, the Intolerable Acts, the Tea Act and Stamp Act, events leading up to the affair, what happened, and its aftermath. In 1765, protest groups were formed to protest against the Tea Act ( (-- removed HTML --) ). One of these groups was the Sons of Liberty, formed by a political writer named Samuel Adams ( (-- removed HTML --) ). In this group, men gathered from Massachustess and other colonies and at first met under the Liberty Tree. They discussed how to fight back against the British, organized riots, protested Taxation without representation, made protest …show more content…
There were two different acts called the Tea Act and the Stamp Act. The Tea Act put heavy taxes on the tea sent to America. However, this tax did not include the tea brought by the British East India company. Every other tea company’s tea would be more expensive due to the added tax. The colonists felt that they were being forced to buy from the British East India company. Then there is the Stamp Act, which colonists were forced to pay. It was on a variety of objects like legal documents and playing Cards. This act was to help the British empire pay for financial setbacks from their debt in the French and Indian war. The act could only be payed in British pounds, which was hard to obtain in the American colonies. These two acts made the colonists start to protest. Many colonial merchants protested against the Stamp Act. They rallied against it publicly which caused widespread protests ( (-- removed HTML --) …show more content…
They punished the colonists by passing a new act called the Intolerable Acts. The new laws took away many freedoms of the colony in Boston. Some of the laws were closing the Boston Harbor and keeping it closed until the cost of the lost tea was paid for, elections of local leaders were ended, charges of crimes were taken into the British’s court’s hands, and colonists were forced to give housing and food to any British soldiers who wanted it. The laws were created to isolate Boston from all the other colonies. This plan backfired, as the other colonies supported Boston. After the new laws were passed, the colonies had joined for a meeting known as the First Continental Congress, which was held in Philadelphia on the 5 September 1774. The colonists wrote to King Gerorge III and declared their loyalty to the King, but asked him to listen to their needs. The colonists asked him if they could make their own taxes/acts, for representation with the British Government, and they wanted the intolerable acts removed. The King never replied to their letter or requests ( (-- removed HTML --) ). Over time, more and more people resisted British rule (https://go.gale.com). Two years later, the colonists united against Britain and the two sides fought each other in the Revolutionary war ( (-- removed HTML --) ). This war was a very important war for the thirteen colonies, starting a future for
This surprised the British government. The colonists even threatened tax collects forcing them to quit their jobs or to even leave the colonies. Protests spread into the streets and groups like the Sons of Liberty encouraged the colonists to boycott British products. These boycotts soon hurt British businesses in the colonies. The British government was forced to repeal the Stamp Act.
The Tea Act caused huge amount of resistance in the colonies that eventually led to what we now know as the Boston Tea Party. The East India Company was planning on distributing the tea to shopkeepers in the colonies, avoiding any direct trade with American merchants who wanted to sell to the shopkeepers. This was causing many problems for Radical Patriots and merchants who were losing out on profits by the British authority. The Tea Act could have been considered an early attempt on a British monopoly of tea as stated by British general Frederick Haldimand of New York. The Tea Act and its policies “has introduced the mercantile part of the Inhabitants to be very industrious in opposing this Step and added Strength to a Spirit of Independence already too prevalent” (Chapter 7, pp. 156).
The Stamp Act was the coal, which fueled the fires inside the colonists. Including Benjamin Franklin who wanted these taxes repealed as soon as possible. The colonists began to boycott as a way of protesting the taxation. The boycotts cut at the very thing string, which were the economic relations between America and Great Britain greatly damaging them once
The colonists abruptly became enraged by these acts passed by Parliament. This was exhibited through how they referred to the acts. While Britain regarded these as the “Coercive Acts”, meaning they enforced stricter laws on the colonists so they obeyed the rules, the colonists referred to them as the “Intolerable Acts”, meaning these acts should not be enforced or allowed. These acts provided consequences for the Boston Tea Party, allowed for convicted British soldiers to be tried in biased ways, excluded numerous colonies from their own claimed territory, alarmed Protestants, and threatened the prospect of “self-government.” Specifically the Massachusetts Government Act and the Quebec Act prompted them to propose they did not hold as much
The Boston Tea Party was one of the most important events in American history. While many might think that the Boston Tea Party was just complaining about taxes, it was truly about the power from King George III and the Parliament. The Boston Tea Party was mainly a protest that was about taxation, but it is truly a political reason because of its power to control the tea companies and the colonists. On December 16, 1773, the Boston Tea Party occurred.
After these laws, the 13 colonies started helping each other and began to reunite. The purpose of the Intolerable Acts was to put control over Boston
The Boston Tea Party was an event where Americans threw three hundred forty-two chests full of tea, which belonged to the British East India Company, into the Boston Harbor. It happened on December 16, 1773, when Americans from Boston dressed up as Indians and threw all of the tea overboard. The Americans were protesting taxes on tea and how much control the British East India Company had in the trading business. POWER (TS) The British East India Company was the main source of trade between the East and Britain for over two hundred years.
It captured the attention of both British authorities and colonists, leading to a series of punitive measures and counteractions. The British Parliament responded by passing the Coercive Acts, also known as the Intolerable Acts, which were intended to punish Massachusetts and bring them under tighter British control. This heavy-handed response further galvanized colonial opposition and pushed moderate colonists toward a revolutionary cause. The Boston Tea Party also united American colonies in a shared spirit of resistance to British tyranny. It inspired similar acts of protest in other port cities, further solidifying the resolve of colonists to assert their rights and liberties.
The Stamp Act In 1765 The Stamp Act was passed where they had to pay stamp tax on every paper they bought. The colonists didn’t mind but they had no say about the new law. This made them quiet angry so they started to revolt about it.
The American Revolution was a dispute between the Thirteen Colonies and Britain. The dispute was crucial because it led to the American colonies breaking away from Britain, and instituting the United States of America. Historians believe that there were many causes for the American Revolution, and numerous conclusions were made about how this guided to dissociation. However, the French and Indian war was the greatest cause of the American Revolution. Also known as the 7 years’ War, the French and Indian war was a conflict between France and Britain over the Ohio Valley River.
When the American colonies mother country of Britain joined the Seven Years war their national debt doubled. In order to make for this debt britain decided to start taxing the colonies directly, which it had never done before. This taxation first came in the form of the Stamp Act which would impose taxes on comercial and legal documents, diplomas, newspapers, almanacs, and playing card. This tax was deeply upsenting for the american people and caused a great resentment twords the british, this resentment leds to protest by boycotting british goods and rioting. Later on, the Tea Act of 1773 caused the british East India Compny to gain a monopoly on the tea trade which excluded and impacted colonial merchants.
This act led to the boycott of English goods and also led to violence as tax collectors were tarred and feathered regularly. Luckily the Stamp Act was repealed, however it was soon replaced by the Townshend Acts. The goal of the Townshend Acts was to decrease tax in Britain and increase taxes in the colonies. They are soon repealed as they are overwhelmingly rejected, except one. The Tea Tax was left in place as the British, of course, wanted to leave their foot in the door making sure the Americans knew that they could tax them however they like.
The stamp act taxed even the littlest of things such as newspapers, documents, licenses, molasses and even playing cards. It angered the colonists, so they responded with violence.
The colonists tried to tell the British that they did not like the law and they didn’t listen so the colonists tipped lots of the British tea into the harbor to show they really don’t like the law. The Intolerable Acts began when the British hoped to force the colonists for the tea lost in the harbor and to obey British rule. The Coercive Acts closed the port of Boston and imposed military rule on all of Massachusetts. The colonists could not tolerate the acts. On the day the acts went into effect, flags throughout the colonies were flown
Before the Boston Massacre the Stamp Act/Townshend Acts. The American colonists were being taxed for their newspapers, and playing cards. The colonists were angered by this, and acted out against their king. As we know from the effects came the Boston Massacre. Yet there was another event before the Revolutionary War.
