In this essay, I will be evaluating whether rationalisation provides the ‘one best way’ to manage and control contemporary organisations. I will be applying my arguments to a specific area of work activity at Junction Hotel, explaining how they would be applied in practice, and evaluating their potential impact on the hotel and on the workers.
Rationalisation is a method that is used to increase a company’s efficiency by reorganising. The effects of rationalisation can lead to a company expanding or downsizing and changes in the company’s strategies.
Bureaucracy is used in organisations to complete large-scale administrative tasks by appointing different people tasks in a methodical way. Bureaucracy has a few characteristics, so let’s see

However, this approach can lead to dehumanization because it gets rid of responsibility, creativity and communication between employees. For example, at McDonalds employees work like robots. From the research I conducted, I noticed that every employee that serves a customer will always take their order in the same way, asking the same question first. This approach would lead to a decrease in efficiency and employee performance because, demotivated employees would give a negative attitude, no job structure and employees could miss out on career opportunities such as promotions and training.
It is essential that Managers at Junction Hotel to understand how teams work so that they can manage each team in the correct way, ensuring that team members know what they are doing and Managers know what to expect from their team. Junction Hotel would experience an increase in productivity and moral because employees would feel like they belong to the company. Junction Hotel could start benefiting from this by implementing new SMART goals which would motivate employees to make sure that they are achieving their goals which benefit the
The Texas Bureaucracy does not have a CEO; the powers are spread among all the different bureau heads. (Slides 2 -20) Indicate how the agencies of the bureaucracy can be organized.
In Goodsell’s “A Case for Bureaucracy” Goodsell makes several valid points about the argument for and against Bureaucracy. Before reading I too would have assumed bureaucracy is a waste of time and that most bureaucrats are just lazy, rude and tend to hate their job. But now I've realized that Bureaucracy does succeed. People, Americans, tend to expect bureaucrats to be able to do anything. Even when the tasks seems impossible they expect the problem to be solved immediately which ultimately sets the bureaucrats up for failure from the beginning.
In a bureaucracy there is a hierarchy of authority. This is seen in the movie is the V-Dub gang. In this gang there is a leader that is extremely paranoid, and then there is the runner who are young male boys. Another example of bureaucracy is the Chinese mafia. Lincoln is one who has orders from an authority of someone in higher ranks them in.
BUREAUCRACY AND SOCIAL WORK A bureaucracy is a type of organization or subcategory of an organization, Zastrow (2009). It is a system of administration distinguished by clear hierarchy of authority, rigid division of labor, clear defined rules and regulations, specialization and impersonal relationships. The aim of bureaucracy is to help the agency to accomplish the most rational and efficient agency operation. The social work profession fits well with the Weber classic definition of bureaucracy in which that those whose role is to control how the organization functions are in structural position that enables them to do so Breakwell & Rowett (1982).
This is why I say there needs to be a certain balance in the workplace. A balance that benefits the employees and
A bureaucracy that I am familiar with is the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State, specifically the Driver Services Department. Max Weber defined a bureaucracy as a formal organization with a hierarchy of authority and a clear division of labor that places emphasis on impersonality of positions and written rules, communications, and records. His characteristics of a bureaucracy applied to the Driver Services Department of the Illinois Secretary of State are shown below: A bureaucracy has separate levels, with assignments flowing downward and accountability flowing upward. The head of this organization is the Illinois Secretary of State, which is an elected official.
Increased Work Efficiency / Productivity A team that has good culture of teamwork and mutual motivation will make the members more productive and smarter. Such a team where seamless and effective relationships exist, members are poised to learn from one another, develop skills and leverage on such internally gained skills to expedite work processes thereby increasing overall efficiency, reducing downtimes and knowledge gaps. Collaboration among such team members will make members to perform at their best by working on what they do best.
It significantly affects employee productivity and the achievement of organizational goals. Similar to Walmart’s mission statement “We save people money so they can live better.", its human resource management approaches for
They are in a generation where they accept the logic of organizational power in short being a conformist. Even though a bureaucratic system is obvious in our government today we are still not made aware of it specially its complications and its consequences. Up to this date we still experience complications in a bureaucratic government also in a bureaucracy mandated business. A bureaucratic government isn’t all negative it has its pro’s specially being a well-organized government as well as a well-organized business organization. but in this paper were going to talk moreover on the negative or the cons of a bureaucratic government.
To Weber the word refers to the structure found in modern large organisations, whether they are government departments, business firms, armies or organised religion. It is a continuous organisation of official functions bound by rules. Weber thought that bureaucratic organisation was the most rational means of deploying power in any setting (Brown and Steel, 1979, p.160). In this essay, I am going to discuss how Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy had a major impact on the development of public administration systems. Classical organisation theory evolved during the first half of this century.
The German sociologist Max Weber [3] described many ideal-typical forms of public administration, government, and business. Weber agreed that bureaucracy constitutes the most efficient and rational way in which human activity can be organized, and that thus is indispensable to the modern
A bureaucratic organization was originally intended to have a hierarchical or pyramidal structure to help achieve the most rational and efficient operation at the lowest cost. The term bureaucracy is a combination of French and Greek words respectively. The word ‘bureau’ means desk or office and the word ‘kratos’ means rule or political power. It was first used by the French economist Jacques Claudes Marie Vincent de Gournay. In order to study the origins and nature of the expansion of bureaucratic organization, weber constructed an ideal type of Bureaucracy.
The term bureaucracy refers to a particular type and technique of administrative organization. In the 1930s Max Weber, a German sociologist and political economist; he wanted to find out why people in organizations obeyed those in authority above them. He wrote a validation that described the bureaucratic form as being the ultimate way of organizing government agencies. Weber’s study of business was centered on understanding the need for stability and consistency in achieving competence.
A centralized structure is usually designed and has a formal layout. While in a decentralized organizational structure, the decision making control is distributed among departments and each department has certain degree of independence. It is usually emergent. Bureaucracy in an organization is based on single chain of command from top level to bottom level. It is the most rigid and formal type of organizational structure.
This will only help the company to succeed and shine. If people feel good about their work, they tend to give their best at work and this is reflected in the quality of their work and also the customer feedback. If a person is not happy at work, they might not want to give their hundred percent and this will affect the customer’s experience and eventually the company’s name. Since these employees are unhappy at work they might not even show up for work quite often.
