Fifth Favorite Essay out of Top Five “Everglades’ Change in Environment” made my top five because I had many different types of information on the Everglades and I supported each reason by using explicit textual evidence. Out of all the explanations this one has the most evidence proving that the drought is the most logical theory. This evidence was found by a team led by David Stahle, who has a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Geography. His team made a very sophisticated study with the tree rings of the remaining trees that are still in the area. They discovered something incredibly surprising. In the summers of 1587-1589, they had the worst drought in almost 800 years.

We can clearly see a pattern of droughts throughout history in the United States. There is no way to control this, droughts happen all over the country, especially in the Great Plains, but we have never and most likely will never see a drought or dust storm as severe as the dust bowl. In the 1930s unusually cool temperatures were occurring in the Pacific. This created a very dry climate across the United States, which was especially bad in the Great Plains.
The more and more one learns about the American Experience, the more one believes that nature is one of America's most valuable or most important assets. As a country that is strictly about a clean environment and keeping the people healthy you would think every person would care and respect the natural world. Yet so many people focus on the little things, they miss out on the beauty of nature and its active life. They don’t look at it as something that has always been there. In the two short stories, “The Sky Tree” by Joseph Bruchac and “Living like weasels” by Annie Dillard, more beliefs and opinions about how nature and its wildlife need to be treated with more attention and respect.
These perspectives have changed, because, in ourselves, we know that climate change is affecting other areas around the globe. Thus, when it is happening in a part of the United States, it awakens in us the realization that it impacts and affects us personally as Americans who consider Alaska a part of home and country. Our perspective of Alaska and its connection to global warming may also change due to the influences of race, culture, gender, and class that are part of our society. The way we look at Alaska is not just from what the film wants us to see regarding Alaska, but is created by the society in which we live in, and how that society has helped define what other places mean to us. In her study between the connection of Alaska’s climate change and the people of Alaska, Christine Shearer argued an opposite idea, in which climate change rather influences “the role of race, gender, and class, as well as nation” and from these environmental issues in Alaskan villages, they have had to “relocate due to climate change”, leading to a change in their society and thus their perspectives in regards to what Alaska means to them as a wilderness and frontier.
