The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, conveys through Abigail and the judges how experiencing unlimited power will lead to abuse of power and deadly undeserved consequences. Many times throughout the play, Abby with her newly gained power irresponsibly uses it for her own benefit without thought about the consequences those actions might cause. The first example of this abuse of power is seen early on in the play in Act 1 through Abigail when she tells the other girls, "I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you." because all of the girls are scared of witchcraft and are about to admit to dancing and conjuring. She was scared that her reputation was going to be damaged by the girls admitting so she used her power of engaging fear in the …show more content…
Abby also shows her power in act III when trying to convince Judge Danforth that she isn't lying or acting by saying,"I have seen my blood runnin‘ out! I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil‘s people—and this is my reward?" She knows that the judges are easily convinced and on her side so she uses a red herring logical fallacy to manipulate and distract judge danforth from there ever being a possibility that she is …show more content…
A final example of Abigail abusing her power is in act III when she says,"Oh, Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it‘s God‘s work I do…" This quote shows how Abby abuses her power of persuasion to shift the accusation of her lying about being a victim of witchcraft to completely flip the script and have her accuser be under target of doing witchcraft and in the act of witchcraft. This quote is very effectively used by Miller because he also engages the audience with the verbal irony in Abby saying she's doing god's work but in reality it would be considered the devil's work. This use of power is self centered and irresponsible by Abby because she is throwing another person under the bus so she can keep up the lie that makes up her life now endangering possibly many more in the future so she won't have to face consequences for her actions. Overall Abby possesses very powerful persuasion and almost every time she uses it; it is in the wrong way and prevents the truth from coming out and justice to be
In The Crucible, the desire for power is prominent, which causes characters in the play to avert events. The church and the Bible were the two main sources of evident power. They held the community together and helped make decisions upon accusations. Abigail, due to her obsession with John Proctor, gained power because she just wanted to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, his wife, thus she began the hysteria. With this, she was looked up to as a savior because she was ‘cleansing’ Salem of witchcraft.
“Abby! Abby, We’ve got to tell.../ We must tell the truth, Abby!” (Miller I. 117). She had the right mindset, but never proceeded with action thus going along with Abigail’s lies.
While Abigail has little regard for those in positions of authority, she frequently opposes them. In Act 3, Abigail accuses Mary Warren of practicing witchcraft. When Judge Danforth confronts Mary, Abigail persuades the court that Mary is sending her spirit to harm the judge. This reveals Abigail's disdain for the truth and her willingness to take advantage of her
She goes so far as to use the witch trials as a weapon against John Proctors wife Elizabeth so she can have John to herself. The court officials do not realize that Abby is lying about confession at first, and when they do realize she is lying they do not stop her because they don’t want people to question their judgement. This basically gives her the power of God, allowing her to decode who shall live and who shall
Abby also is very manipulative. While, the witch trials are holding place in Salem, Abigail uses this characteristic to her advantage. When Danforth asks a question to Abigail, she responds, “’Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits?’”(Miller 108). Abby is clearly demonstrating that she is manipulative because she turned the table and started to ask the Judge if he doubted her of lying.
First, Abby uses manipulation to get others to stick to the story of that they were just dancing. She does this by threating Betty and Mary Warren's life so that she will do what she says. Abby says, “… I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy black reckoning that will shudder you”
Abby thought that just because she had the power of being able to accuse people, that she could just accuse anyone and it eventually got to her head and they stopped believing her. Another theme relating to the conflict of John Proctor being hanged is the theme of “lying eventually catches up to you.” When Abby saw that John was getting accused she was angry because the whole reason she was lying was to get to John and try to be with him and Reverend Hale felt bad because he didn’t think that Proctor, Cory or Nurse were witches. Abby then went to the judge of the court and told him that Hale’s wife was a witch.
The power that Abigail Williams has on the town of Salem, may be fatal. Abigail’s attempt to “defend” herself, comes across as a threat to many of the townspeople. By the third act in the play, Abigail has gotten powerful enough that she can threaten the Deputy Governor of the entire province without negative consequences. “Abigail, in an open threat: Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits?
Abby also stabs herself in the stomach with a needle and lies that Elizabeth used her witchcraft to stab Abby. The community believes Abby’s story because there is a poppet in Elizabeth’s house with a needle in its stomach. Since Abby already has credibility and has proof that Elizabeth is a witch, she is able to get Elizabeth arrested. With Elizabeth out of the way, Abby believes that she can get back together with John. The second reason why Abigail has great influence over Elizabeth is so Abby can prevent Elizabeth from spreading the truth.
She says ,"I have been hurt Mr. Danforth; I have seen my blood runnin' out! I have been near to murdered every day because I did my duty pointing out the Devil's people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied and questioned like a-"(Act 3, Pg. 108). This statement shows her that Abby likes her newfound power and will let no one take it away and power-hungriness is a villainous trait. The scene that truly shows Abigail as the villain, is the scene where she leads accusations against former accuser Mary Warren when she tries to admit to faking the fits, driving her insane to the point that she rejoins the accusers.
This will spark the main conflict in the play, and Abby caused it all because of her
Although, no one or thing is perfect, Abigail was still close to believing she had everything under control. In the website Wikiversity, the type of manipulation that Abigail used was called “Emotional Manipulation. In addition, the website inquires this type of manipulation as an “Emotional or psychological manipulation is a form of social influence where a perpetrator attempts to further their own purposes or agendas using manipulative techniques and deception, in order to obtain the assistance of another. Emotional manipulation can occur is [grammar?] many aspects of everyday life including in families, relationships and friendships, the workplace, in selling, and in a variety of other settings.”
Abigail finally sees the outturn of her lies she has made for what she wants. Proctor is hanged which she didn’t attend to do, but now pays the price. She also found out what lying can do “They’re pretending, Mr. Danforth... Mary, please don’t hurt me!.”(miller 120-121). Lying has made her corrupt and is used to persuade to make harm with.
Abigail 's heartless attitude is shown in act two when she frames and accuses Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. She desired and longed for this revenge on poor Proctors innocent wife, aiming for her through out the play. Later on in Act Three she seems to lose her last attachment of society by destroying John Proctor, who she claims to love with all her heart. When John attempts and threatens to expose Abigail’s wrong doings, she skillfully manages to turn the whole problem around on him, sending him off
Abby’s powers denote that villainous ninja clan kennedy as the Hand is chasing her down. This is all distributed in one stilted conversation at the 1:04 mark, because it takes that long for the plot to get even proximate to being
