Throughout The Crucible, fear and hysteria destroy all of Salem’s good judgement. The people who live in Salem do not know how to handle the madness that is taking place. They believe that the only way to attempt to handle it is to give in to it. This is where it is shown that fear can be so much more than fear. It can be used for political benefit, personal gain, and even as ammunition for revenge. Fear can be used for political benefit. Judge Danforth does this by not changing his verdict of those who were charged with witchcraft. He is the head judge of the court in Salem and he makes sure to be strict with the law. It is shown that at the beginning of the play, he believes the girls when they talk about witchcraft because why would they lie about something like this? When Hale challenges Judge Danforth about this unlikely story, he changes his …show more content…
Abigail Williams, the girl who started all of this madness, used this hysteria to get revenge on John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. John and Abigail had an affair together and Elizabeth found out. Elizabeth then fired Abigail from being their servant to protect her and her husband’s marriage. Abigail wanted revenge, so she made plans to get rid of Elizabeth to have John all to herself. Abigail even says to Parris’ daughter Betty,“…let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a point reckoning that will shudder you” (1137). This shows that Abigail does not care what lengths she has to go to get John back. She would even murder his wife to do so. This is when Abigail convicts Elizabeth of witchcraft by using the Proctors’ new servant to give Elizabeth a doll. Abigail uses this doll to accuse Elizabeth of using voodoo on her. Abigail uses the fear of witchcraft and the people’s fear of her to get revenge on Elizabeth in hopes to get what she wanted the most: John
Think for one moment, you’re in a situation where you need to make a decision that you have no idea of what the future is going to bring you. Most people tend to have fear when it comes to situations like this. A better understanding is that fear can be inflicted into the mind of individuals and severely affect them and manipulate them . This might seem unusual but, this reason states otherwise. In the play “The Crucible” the author, Arthur Miller, implies that fear can have a dramatic effect on society.
In order to keep the court, which he is the head of, seen as just, he refused to accept evidence of any kind. Later in the play, when Hale told Danforth that he must pardon the accused, Danforth says, “You misunderstand, sir; I cannot pardon these when twelve are already hanged for the same crime. It is not just” (Miller, 200). Danforth now knows that the accused are most likely not witches, but still decided to hang them. He did this because he feared that if the townsfolk thought that the others were unjustly killed, they may riot like those in Andover, and possibly kill him in retaliation.
Abigail seeked out venges against John Proctor therefore targeting his wife. In her head she decided that if she couldn’t be with John then no one else could. Abigail saw that the people were afraid, vulnerable and took advantage of the situation to try and save herself. She was afraid that the public will find about her affair with John Proctor, and about the witchcraft that happened that night in the forest.
Abigail framed Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. Also Abigail charged Elizabeth for creating a voodoo doll to stab her with a needle. John Proctor didn’t take the police taking his wife away very well and he knew he had to seek revenge. Proctor told abigail he would never touch her again and that he wanted his wife. When he realized what she was doing to his wife, he knew what he had to do.
There are many reasons that could have cause Abigail to seek revenge and act out in such a way that put everyone’s life at potential risk. Abigail’s past has a lot to it, as revealed when Proctor visits Salem and runs into Abigail who expresses her anger and jealousy towards Elizabeth. When Betty and Ruth (who are also young girls) are supposedly diagnosed with the ‘devil being inside of them’, and people come to the conclusion that witchcraft has taken a negative impact on them, John Proctor ends up visiting Salem to figure out what is going on. As John Proctor is leaving the town of Salem, he runs into Abigail who is still looking for trouble.
How Fear Motivates the Characters in The Crucible Fear plays an important role in the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller.. It motivates the accusers and the accused. The first accuser in the play was Abigail. She accused Tituba of being a witch.
Abigail was not only one of the girls that got caught dancing in the forest, she was the only girl that drank a blood charm in order to kill John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth Proctor. The Jealousy and hate she has for Mrs. Proctor is undeniable when she calls her “a bitter woman, a lying cold sniveling woman” (1271) and a “gossiping liar.” Abigail clearly conjured with the devil in hopes that it would get rid of the only obstacle standing in the way of her being with Mr. Proctor. Abigail naively believes that her feeling for John are reciprocated because of an affair that may or may not have happened. With the jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor and desire for John Proctor, we can see that Abgail’s motives for accusing other people , specifically Elizabeth, are completely self-centered.
Abigail wanted to get her vengeance on Elizabeth Proctor for firing her as a maid. John Proctor screamed in rage at Judge Danforth, “She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave!... But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it…”(3.863-8). Abigail wanted to kill or blame Elizabeth for witchcraft to get her vengeance. She may have wanted vengeance, but that did not happen as much as scapegoating like when Abigail scapegoated Tituba.
The Crucible Persecution Essay During the play, persecution is led to by many causes of vengeance. Abigail Williams has an affair with John Proctor. After John calls off the affair, Abigail wants him to herself, and tries to get her revenge by accusing Elizabeth of having a voodoo doll. Mary Warren is sitting by Abigail in the courtroom when she is making Elizabeth a poppet. After Mary finishes her poppet, she sticks a needle in its side.
Abigail accused Elizabeth and tried to have her hang so that she could become Proctor’s wife. But while trying to achieve her one true wish, her manipulative tactics backfired with John’s confession of the affair. Abigail ultimately failed in her
Franklin D. Roosevelt once stated “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” this is extremely apparent in the play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller that depicts the events that took place during the salem witch trials. These events in American history had countless similarities that led to the persecution of many innocent individuals. Arthur Miller effectively demonstrates this concept in his play The Crucible by drawing parallels between the witch trials of the 1690’s and the “The Great Fear” of the 1950’s. The Salem Witch Trials and the “The Great Fear” were both the product of fear, hysteria, and false accusations.
She thinks that will be enough to make him go back to her. John might feel some lust for Abigail, but he isn't going to act upon his feelings anymore. Abigail knows that the reason he isn't giving in is because of Elizabeth. To Abigail, Elizabeth is in obstacle between her and John. Abigail is motivated by the lust she has for John to falsely accuse Elizabeth of being a witch, thus eliminating her from John's
Fear that spread among a group of people in Salem during the Salem Witch Trials, that event in history is a prime example of Mass Hysteria. In Salem the reason why so many women were killed was because of Mass Hysteria. It caused many people, in Salem during this event to think fast, rash and jump to conclusions. “The Crucible”, a short play dedicated to these events in Salem shows us how hysteria was such a leading cause of why the Witch Trials had even occurred. Reverend Hale, Abigail Williams and Judge Danforth.
This angered Abigail and made more conflict in the play. So in a vengeful way she turned Elizabeth in for trying to kill her through witchcraft. If Abigail would stop all of this nonsense and accept that John Proctor has a loving wife, this conflict would
The Crucible: How Fear Changes People During his first Inaugural Address, Franklin D. Roosevelt once announced, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Fear manipulates a persons rationality resulting in them behaving in ways they normally would not, especially in the story The Crucible written by Arthur Miller. The characters in The Crucible allow fear to manipulate their beliefs and actions. They all know what is right, but fear alters their mindset causing them to act differently.
