In the play, there were evidence on why she is twisting the truth and knowing on what she was doing. In act 1,Abigail and some girls were dancing around the fire in the forest and almost getting in trouble for the cause of two girls unable to wake up she blamed on Tituba for forcing Abigail to drink blood and for witchcraft.Abigail was in love with Proctor and hated his wife for what she did to her, Abigail accuse Goody Proctor for witchcraft. In the end of the play you can see Abigail running away knowing sooner or later she will get discover. Abigail is a manipulative liar. Famous author Arthur Miller points out in The Crucible that hysteria broke out over the perceived threat of witchcraft, which served as an analogy for the communists during the Red Scare. During the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, many Americans believed a war would break out and thus caused hysteria among society. Miller writes a play about a couple who has an affair in a religious small town. Abigail, the cleaning lady for the Proctor family, commits adultery with Mr. John Proctor is soon caught by Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor.
In the Crucible there are many heinous characters, but for me the most despicable is Abigail. The two reasons that I find her to be the most despicable is because she somehow got all her friends to perform satanic rituals with her in the forest, and also the fact that she and her friends all lied about it, which put many innocent people in jeopardy. In the beginning of the book, Parris sees a large group of girls dancing in the forest naked. As he was approaching the girls to see what was going on, all the girls ran away screaming, leaving behind a pot with a ladel and a frog in it.
It becomes apparent in the very first Act that Abigail is not a trustworthy character. She is willing to throw blame at anyone to deflect the suspicion from herself, or even to gain something she wants. I suppose in some ways Abigail could be seen as a tragic character, but her manipulative nature sure makes it difficult to sympathize with her. She is willing to hang an innocent woman in her delusion that this will somehow result in John Proctor realizing his love for her. He has made it clear multiple times he has moved on and wishes to not see her but - of course - Abigail only persists.
I have come to the conclusion that Abigail, from The Crucible, was the villain of the stage drama. First, she wrongly accused innocent people of the heinous crime, witchcraft. For instance, in Act 2, Abigail accuses Elizabeth in court, which causes the town to question the Procter family’s christianity. In other words, this town held religion to the highest accord. Therefore when someone caused questioning around the subject, everyone turned their back on the accused.
J. Blackledge 27 January 2023 CCR English III Block 4 In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is an abundance of dishonesty. In a time of deception, there are many characters blind to the truth. Some people were informed of the truth but denied it. One example of this is the judge of Salem.
Lies and Deceit Arthur Miller’s The Crucible reveals to the reader about lies and deceit in the small town of Salem. Abigail Williams, a 17 year old girl who lets her jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor turn her into this evil person and affect the lives of many. Several lies unfold from the actions of the two characters as the court questions them. The development of characters, setting, and plot are revealed through John Proctor’s growth. Miller reveals the central idea of lies and deceit in Abigail's actions throughout the play.
People commonly say cliches like "good will always win" and "the truth will always prevail"; however, when led by a controlling governing power and manipulated by religion these statements can be proven untrue. In The Crucible, Abigail causes problems throughout the town by lying about witchcraft. She is seen as a reliable source and uses this to her advantage to manipulate people and accuse women of witchcraft. Abigail continuously lies with the intentions to pursue her past relationship with John, despite his many attempts to reveal the truth and get the town to see through her lies. Many people end up being hanged due to Abigail's deceit.
The play ‘’The Crucible’’ by Arthur Miller displays the importance of one taking responsibility for one’s action. It expresses in great detail how the inability of one person to stand up to their own mistakes can lead to deadly circumstances. Also just how much lies, deceit and pure evil can result in such terrible situations. In this play, Abigail Williams is very much to blame for many tragic deaths which is demonstrated by her many cruel actions, reminding the audience that one person can destroy an entire society. Abigail’s choice to cast a spell to kill Goody Proctor demonstrates her irrational love for Proctor which leads to the demise of the community.
Abigail is manipulating everyone by saying she sees a bird when she doesn't. She continues to lie so that she can protect herself like before with everyone else. Because of her actions, she killed many innocent people. “Ninety-one” people were executed because of her and the only reason they were executed was because they accused her of lying. So now that Mary Warren accused her of lying, Abigail is doing the same thing she did with the others.
Arthur Miller’s portrayal of a town in the midst of a downfall “The Crucible”, tells the story of how mob mentality and hysteria can significantly influence not only individuals but the whole town. This mob mentality leads to unthoughtful acts and false accusations. Two characters who demonstrate how mob mentality can lead to the demise of Salem are Abigail and Mary Warren. As Abigail begins to be accused she is pressured to deter from the truth. While Mary Warren gets pressured by Proctor to reveal the truth about Abigail, but the overwhelming pressure from the mob makes her turn from the truth.
It may be that Abigail believed that it was too late to correct her mistakes, but in the course of reality, it is never too late to correct past faults. Abigail fails to come to this realization, and continues to play victim in order to manipulate the court. Everyone, no matter their class or where they are from, goes thru tough times, but the difficult times of the past cannot be used as an excuse to cause
Abigail Williams is one of the main characters that tend to lack integrity due to her selfishness and dishonesty. She lies about her involvement with the witches of Salem to save herself from being thrown in jail or even put to death. She also lies her way throughout the play to form a type of podium showing that she is on top. One way she showed this was when she blamed innocent people for these horrible acts in Salem. In one part during the trial abigail says “ No one was naked!
Abigail uses her own personal desires to get to what she wants even though many people died in the
