Animal Farm is arguably one of the best examples to show corruption created by a totalitarian government. Many characters' hardships are demonstrated through the dictation of the three pigs, Squealer, Napoleon, and Snowball. Napoleon’s government system was the most corrupted, as he used the combination of his nine dogs and Squealer’s master-manipulation to maintain his power. The most substantial factor influencing this corruption was not manipulation or the power-hoarding behavior, but instead the animals' illiteracy and ignorance towards everything the pigs got away with. A component that led to the deceit on Animal Farm was manipulation. In the beginning of the story, Old Major, a pig who has been on the farm for a long time, gives a speech. From the minute the rebellion started, all the animals, except the pigs, had a disadvantage. They would never be able to learn as well as the pigs could, or know as much as the pigs knew. In the story, around chapter two, the pigs test the other animals’ knowledge by starting to teach them. The animals were excessively blinded by the fact that when the pigs took over it meant they would have to basically work for them while they sat back and watched. All three pigs walked around to make sure the other animals were doing their work, but they never did their own. In addition, now they would never find out they were being taken advantage of because they thought the pigs were trying to help them by playing teacher. The whole book is upsetting because they got foresighted the whole time. Even when it was obvious the pigs got better things, they never got the chance to think twice because they truly believed the pigs wanted to help them.
