Both Megamind and Odysseus are epic heros, but Megamind is the greater epic hero. Both characters are shown with epic hero traits but Megamind creates a better image of an epic hero. In summary both characters will be compared using information from the Odyssey and the movie Megamind.
In the story “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is capable of deeds of great courage and bravery due to his intelligence, cunning, and strategic thinking. One example of this can be found in book 10 of “The Odyssey” when Odysseus and his men encounter the Giant cyclops Polyphemus. The quote is “I tied them [rams] silently together, then slung a man under each middle one to ride there shielded left and right by the wooly bellies” (Book 10, lines 235-237). In context, Odysseus

This plan required quick thinking and resourcefulness, which are qualities that make Odysseus a capable leader and hero. In Book 10 of “The Odyssey”, Odysseus uses both strength and strategy to overcome the challenges he faces during his encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus. The quote is “I drew it from the coal, and my men gathered round me, and some god breathed courage into us” (Book 10, lines 420-421). This quote shows Odysseus’ strength as he physically pulls a wooden stake out of a fire. He then uses the stake to blind Polyphemus and escape from his cave. However, Odysseus also uses strategy by first getting Polyphemus drunk on wine and also telling Polyphemus that his name is “Nobody.” This allows him to trick the other Cyclops’ into thinking nobody hurt Polyphemus when he is blinded, making it more difficult for Polyphemus to seek revenge.Overall, Odysseus’ use of strength and strategy in this scene show that he is a skilled warrior and leader who is able to overcome even the most difficult challenges. In the story “The Odyssey '', Odysseus faces the villainous sorceress Circe and receives help from the god Hermes. One quote that …show more content…
One example of this can be found when he decides to confront his creation, Titan, who has turned into a dangerous villain. The quote showing this is “You’re a villain alright, just not a super one” (Megamind, 2010). This quote shows megaminds bravery as he confronts Titan, who is much stronger than him. Despite being outmatched physically, Megamind uses his intelligence and cunning to outsmart Titan and ultimately defeat him. This act of bravery shows that Megamind is willing to put himself in danger to protect others and to do what's right, even if it means going up against someone more powerful than himself. In the movie “Megamind”, one example of Megamind’s strength and strategy in times of war can be seen in the final battle scene of the movie. In this scene, Megamind faces off against his nemesis, Titan, who has gained incredible strength and powers. Despite Titan’s physical superiority, Megamind is able to defeat him using his intelligence and strategic thinking. Megamind realizes that Titan’s powers are fueled by his emotions, so he creates a device that simulates emotional feedback to overload Titan’s powers. He then engages in a battle of wits with Titan, using his intelligence to outmaneuver him and ultimately defeat him. This example shows how megamind combines his physical
The main character Odysseus is often portrayed as an epic hero. An epic hero is typically found to be a larger-than-life figure who goes on a journey and faces many challenges along the way, ultimately returning home as a changed and better person. One example of Odysseus displaying the characteristics of an epic hero is when he faces the Cyclops Polyphemus. "But resourceful Odysseus, his mind spinning with plans, replied with guile: 'My name is Nobody: mother, father, friends, everyone calls me Nobody'"
In the myth, The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus fights a cyclops named Polyphemius. During their battle, the hero's men were eaten by the cyclopes, and Odysseus uses the cyclop's bad eyesight to his advanage. Odysseus also mocks Polymethius by tricking the cyclops into thinking Odysseus's name was "Nobody." To escape the cave the cyclops trapped him in, he climbs on a sheep's underside and sneeks his way out of the cave.
Armando Lopez Williams English I 24 February 2023 Odysseus A True Epic Hero Odysseus is a true epic hero showing his heroic qualities in the book The Odyssey. Trying to get back home Odyssues had to travel for 20 years going on adventures to get pushed back constantly. Odysseus is a hero because he shows Strength, Intelligence and patience while dealing with difficult situations.
In the Odyssey by homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the Cyclops encounter is one of Odysseus’ greatest flaws and successes at the same time. It began to go downhill when Odysseus lies about his name and the condition of his ship. When him and his men are captured by the cyclops Odysseus claims his name is nobody, and his ship was wrecked, he does this to aid his escape plan and as a tactic to guard his name and men. When the escape plan is put into play, Odysseus stabs the cyclops in the eye with a red hot spear all the while him lying about his name was put into use because the cyclops yells, in agonizing pain, nobody stabbed him in the eye, this causes the other cyclops to lower there guard and not go to assist their brethren. All
Odysseus’ greed and desire to be treated as king causes Polyphemus to become enraged and hold his guests hostage. Polyphemus also began to devour his guests two-by-two and put Odysseus in danger, at his own fault. In seeing his greed, the reader can determine that Odysseus does not care for his men but only himself and his well being. In the execution of his plan to blind the cyclops, Odysseus launched the burning olive branch into Polyphemus’ eye as hard as he possibly could. After he lugged the branch in his eye, Odysseus proceeded to twist the branch and completely burn and destroy the cyclops’ eye ([374-380]).
Again, he is tricking the Cyclops and thinking ahead. This time, instead of preventing the ship from being damaged, Odysseus stops other Cyclops from trying to help Polyphemus. His intelligence allows him and his men to
This is proven once again with his encounter with Polyphemus, the most renowned Cyclops. Odysseus knows that however strong he might think he is, he is no match for the Son of Poseidon. He does show a display of physical strength in this episode, and stabs the Cyclops in the eye, blinding him. However, the deadliest thing Odysseus does to the Cyclops is previously using Polyphemus’ stupidity against him, by wittily claiming that he was “Noman”, (no man). Upon being stabbed and his neighbours trying to help him, Polyphemus screams "(No man) is trying to kill me!" and loses all chances of getting help, sending off his allies.
At one point Odysseus meets Polyphemus, who is a Cyclops. He is also a son of Poseidon. Odysseus had to save him and his men from becoming the Cyclops meal. The author writes, “ lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye, and I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright tuns a drill…” ( lines 289- 293). Odysseus shows his strength and determination when battling against this monster.
Not only does he display qualities of an epic hero in times of conflict, but he also does in times of peace. Odysseus’ cunning intelligence is seen in a time of conflict when he and his men are in the Land of the Cyclopes and are tasked with the job of escaping the one-eyed giant, Polyphemus. Given the intense circumstances they are under, it is Odysseus’ job, as a leader, to lead his men to escape. Being the shrewd character he is, Odysseus plots to sedate Polyphemus with wine. He
A successful leader, according to Homer, must be able to make wise choices and lead their men to victory. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates his cunning in a variety of ways, each time giving more and more proof of his intelligence. He is well-known for being one of the most cunning epic heroes ever in Greek mythology. The epic scene when Odysseus introduces himself as Noman to attack Polyphemus, "Cyclops … you wish to know the name I bear. I will tell you then, but in return I should like to have the gift you promised me.
After he successfully exits the cave by blinding the cyclopes, he and his surviving men board the ship. As a result of his pride, he calls out to the monster, "If anyone asks who put out your eye, tell them it was Odysseus of Ithaca!”(Hinds 109). Considering the fact Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, the cyclops calls out to him and therefore starts the troublesome voyage for Odysseus back home. When he returns to Ithaca he learns to control his hubris by replacing it with patience. Athena, the goddess of war and strategy, disguises Odysseus as a beggar because it is wisest to arrive in Ithaca without anyone being able to recognize him.
Throughout the stories of the Odyssey the main character, Odysseus, is known to have a major flaw that almost gets him killed numerous times. One example is shown in the story Cyclops. As he is fleeing from the island he can’t resist the jest of calling Polyphemus to the edge of the cliff and flinging taunts at him from the assumed safety of their boat, in the ocean. Polyphemeus responds by flinging a boulder that narrowly misses the boat. Shortly after, Odysseus decides to test his luck yet again by revealing his true identity to the angry Cyclops.
Odysseus is an epic hero because of his bravery and confidence during every obstacle throughout his journey In Part 1 whie Odysseus is about to come across cyclops cave, he says “I brought along and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon so soon- all outward power, a wild man, ignorant of civility. “ Odysseus is showing his bravery of not being petrified of what he might come across, like the cyclops. Odysseus has no intention of harming them, but he is not sure what their intention is. This example is important because not only does it show confidence in himself, he also shows confidence in his men. In Part 2 Odysseus also shows his confidence in his men in part 2 where Eurylochus says, “Are you flesh and blood, Odysseus, to endure more than a man can?
For example they are almost home and his crew opens the bag of winds that sends them flying through the ocean. “Nevertheless we sailed on, night and day, for nine days, and on the tenth at last appeared the land of our fathers, and we could see people tending fires, we were very close to them. But then the sweet sleep came upon me, for I was worn out with always handling the sheet myself, and I could not give it to any other companion, so we could come home quicker to our own country; but my companions talked with each other and said that I was bringing silver and gold home with me, given me by great-hearted Aiolos, son of Hippotas; […] and the evil counsel of my companions prevailed, and they opened the bag and the winds all burst out. Suddenly the storm caught them away and swept them over the water weeping, away from their own country. ”(10.28-36,
Odysseus was a man of great stature and strength; however, Odysseus was not only physically strong, but mentally strong as well (Olson). We can see Odysseus’ mental strength, or cunning, and bravery when he is in the den of Polyphemus and devises the plan to save him and his crew by calling himself nobody and stabbing out the cyclops’ eye. He also recognizes that he
