My name is Madeline Leveridge. I am reaching out regarding the Buchanans. I have heard about the situation with the Wilson’s and a Mr. Jay Gatsby. I sense that you resent Tom Buchanan for causing the reprehensible behavior of his wife and others.I understand the feeling of not wanting to forgive them as justice has not been seen, but I am writing to you in hopes of changing your mind. I believe that you should forgive Tom Buchanan and his wife for the murder of Myrtle Wilson, George Wilson, and Jay Gatsby. I think that you should forgive because it will allow you to release the burden of the immoral standards of the Buchanans and you will be able to live your life without the hurt of the events that have happened affecting you. “If to forgive …show more content…
Everytime the main character, Prospero, is wronged he seeks revenge or justice before he forgives. This pays a price and in the end is not truly forgiving. In order to successfully forgive an action that was flawed you need to find that peace within yourself. As shown in the quote, Prospero calls for some sort of action before he tries to find that peace. I believe that his story can help reflect on your situation. While the actions of the Buchanans were extremely dishonorable, I believe that instead of being disrupted by the fact they got away with their actions you should choose to forgive them. This is in no way for their benefit. It is strictly so you don’t have to carry the burden of the harsh sequence of events that took place. By releasing the resentment towards them, you will no longer be haunted by the violent commotion Daisy caused. “Researchers have studied whether training in forgiveness results in improved well-being. They are finding as they follow up with people the benefits listed above are significant, and they last long after the training.” (PBS, 4) The murder of Myrtle Wilson and the scenes that took place after …show more content…
Justice and forgiveness are different things, even though they normally are closely related. Forgiving is healing for oneself while justice is generally seen as an apology or punishment for wrongdoing. With the life of Jay Gatsby and people involved, the Buchanans got away with their vices which makes it even harder to move on and not have resentment towards them. That does not mean it is impossible to forgive them. Nelson Mandela is an example of this. Africans went through the awful racial segregation called Apartheid. Mandela spent his life fighting against it, and was wronged many times in the process. When the social issue finally ended in 1994, Mandela was elected president of the newly freed Africa. Many people thought that Africans would search for revenue and justice, but instead they came out with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The world thought that moving on from the discrimination without some sort of punishment was unachievable, but Africa did it with grace and kindness which proves that it is possible and in the end beneficial. Furthermore, it is true that forgiving doesn’t make all wrongs okay, but forgiving is not the same as forgetting. It is possible to forgive someone, but not want to pursue a relationship with them. Executing resentment towards someone is not the same as continuing interactions with them. For example,
Although he didn’t wield the gun, Tom Buchanan is a murderer. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a main plot point is love and relationships. This includes marriages, secret affairs, dating, and old love. In a mix of jealousy and being self centered, Tom became too caught up in the love triangles, resulting in Jay Gatsby’s death. Tom was the person who told everyone what cars to take, both before and after going to town with the group, as well as causing an argument between Gatsby, Daisy, and himself.
Finally, Kor expresses the importance of forgiveness. “Anger and hate are seeds that germinate war. Forgiveness is a seed for peace. It is the ultimate act of self-healing. I look at forgiveness as the summit of a very tall mountain” (Kor and Buccieri 133).
In addition to Tom Buchanan’s hatred for Gatsby, Tom can be labeled as responsible for Gatsby’s death as a result of Tom’s affair, his lie, and his carelessness. While Daisy did lead Gatsby on with a minor relationship, her decision arose from Tom’s unfaithful love for her as he had an affair with Myrtle Wilson. If Tom had shown Daisy undying love for her, there would not have been a reason for Daisy to have feelings for Gatsby once again. When George went out in search for Myrtle’s killer, he stopped at the Buchanan’s house. During their conversation, Tom mentions that Gatsby had been responsible for hitting Myrtle with the car and killing her.
Finally forgiving someone is harder than forgiving someone. Simon did not forgive Karl because he burned down a house with hundreds of Jews and he was selfish when he asked for forgiveness. Through the book you can see that Simon is having trouble deciding to forgive or to not forgive Karl. It is not easy to not forgive someone who needs help. When you don’t forgive someone you have to take a step in their shoes and think of what they are going through.
Tom Buchanan, a wealthy and powerful man, uses Myrtle as a mistress and treats her with little respect or consideration. She is merely used as just a tool of enjoyment for Tom rather than a person whom he has compassion for. “ ‘It’s his wife that’s keeping them apart. She’s a Catholic, and they don't believe in divorce’ Daisy was not a Catholic, and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie” (Fitzgerald 33). This quote reveals a key aspect of the relationship between Tom and his partner, Myrtle Wilson.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, wrote Tom whose flaws are being a cheater and abusive person. Tom Buchanan’s abusive behavior towards his lovers in the book is something that should never be overlooked. One could overlook the cheating due to being blind in love and money, but abuse is crossing the line of morality. Even though everyone knew about his behavior, he never tried to change and continued to hurt them. It is not possible to overlook his physical abusive behavior even if he is a wealthy man.
Forgive and Forget? Why do we continue to push the narrative that forgiveness is the key to happiness? Although forgiveness is often established as a crucial step toward achieving inner peace, it isn't necessary for happiness and well-being. Depending on the offense's severity and the offender's lack of remorse, holding onto negative emotions and choosing not to forgive can be a viable alternative that promotes personal well-being and empowerment for individuals.
Learning How to Forgive Forgiving someone do not remove the guilt of a person or a group who makes mistakes. Forgiveness is an unexceptional theme that society has since early times in the history of humanity, and it is a easy target for individuals of a social group to judge. The theme brings up religious effects, which influence many actions and what believers do. When it comes to family, the society’s finger of blame is pointed at parents who fail their responsibilities in raising their children.
Forgiveness Must Be Within Very few people are truly happy in life, because we are all a little mad at ourselves. The only way to become truly happy is to forgive yourself. In the book night the author Elie Wiesel tells the story of what he experienced throughout the holocaust. You see how horrible it was and how his life was affected by the atrocity. Although some people say that you do not need forgiveness to be happy I disagree.
It’s true you won´t deep down always forgive someone because their actions are irreversible or may be unforgivable, but it’s better for there to be an effort of forgiving in order to move on. Or you may argue that people can move on without forgiveness and just not care or hate that person and what they did. Though just as Elie Wiesel noted in his preface, ¨the past lingers in the present.¨ (Wiesel vii) There will always be a part of you that'll hold onto what happened. For example, after the Nazi´s freed the prisoners Elie said not one of them thought of revenge.
In the long run, these events don’t matter. How we handle the situation rather than the situation itself is what increases our character. When experiencing a trial, each person has two choices- forgive and move on or hold on to the hurt and remain bitter. Forgiving others is necessary to attain true peace of mind. But not always do people know how to handle situations such as these.
So I will confidently say, forgiveness is never necessary for long term happiness if you can learn to move on. Lots of people in our world consider themselves generally happy, now how many of them do you think have been wronged? Probably a lot, whether it was a full blown betrayal or simply having a pencil stolen,
However, Wilson uses violence under much more extreme conditions. For instance, when he is talking to Michaelis about Myrtle’s death, he says “It was the man in that car. She ran out to speak to him and he wouldn’t stop”(87). This quote shows that Wilson believes the driver of the car that killed Myrtle was performing an act of murder. This revelation and earlier discovery of his wife’s affair pushes him to the brink of reality, and he believes there is no solution other than to avenge his wife’s death.
If his mind is not occupied by his mistress Myrtle, he is drowning in thoughts of Gatsby’s suspected crime-filled life. “Indeed, Tom Buchanan's sources appear most reliable in his characterization of Gatsby's drug store chain as ‘just small change’ compared to his stolen bonds” (Pauly 116). Buchanan is a hypocrite towards Gatsby. He denounces Gatsby’s life actions as being morally evil but Tom’s actions are no different than Gatsby’s in the sense that both men are unfaithful to themselves and their nearest relationships. Tom is competing with Gatsby through deception and treachery, and their dangerous habits wound them
Forgiveness is the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven. (Hawkins, 1994, P. 206) My personal understanding of the parable ‘The Prodigal Son” is that it portrays the importance of reasoning and forgiveness. The main characters in the parable are two sons and a betrayed father. The father remains constant throughout the parable, although he has being betrayed by his younger son.
