The term revenge is prevalent in the play Hamlet multiple times. My definition of revenge is the desire to get back at someone for something they have done to that person.
This term is throughout the whole play. One of the first times that the concept is mentioned is when Hamlet finds out about his father being killed. This is happens when Hamlet sees the ghost of his father wondering around. These few lines from the play demonstrate how the concept of revenge is used in this scene that I have explained:
Ghost “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder”
Hamlet “Murder”
Ghost “Murder most foul, as in the best it is, But this most foul, strange, unnatural”
Hamlet “Haste me to know’t, that I, with wings as swift As Meditation or the thoughts

Laertes says “I am satisfied in nature, whose motive in this case should stir me most to my revenge; but in my terms of honour I stand aloof” (273).
This shows that Laertes still wants to get revenge on Hamlet for killing Polonius. Since this has happened, the play goes into a lot of turmoil. The play goes into turmoil because Hamlet is trying to get revenge for his father's death while Laertes is trying to get revenge on Hamlet for the killing of Polonius. The concept of revenge is prevalent in this play, but the concept could also be applied to my life as well. For example, one time that I have had the concept of revenge in my life would be my sophomore year during football season. During this year our numbers on the Varsity team were down so there was a lot of us sophomores playing Varsity. Every Friday night we would play and get destroyed by the other team. After that, we would have Saturday morning practices just for the Junior Varsity (JV). We would be so mad because we lost the previous night and we hated losing. Then when it came Monday and we played the JV team from the same school we played on Friday, and we were out for revenge. We played wanting to beat them to show them that just because their Varsity beat our Varsity doesn't mean that it is going to be an easy game for them. We played that way all season. We ended
Revenge is a strong urge that shouldn't be acted upon because of the consequences. Understanding the influence of emotion and thought on human behavior is important for coming up with solutions to problems. Karyn Hall writes about, and goes in-depth about the topic of revenge. Revenge is self-destructive, yet it is still a part of everyday life. One theory about the purpose of revenge is to prevent certain hostile actions.
This quote is significant due to Hamlet’s slight distrust of the ghost, and the use of the play to revile the truth of Claudius’ malevolent decision. Hamlet asks the only person he trust Horatio to help him watch over Claudius’, in order to finally determine his guilt. With the help of Horatio, Hamlet can continue on with the revenge plot and rightfully go through with the plan. That is representative to the theme of revenge because Hamlet will use the play to avenge his father’s sick murder. The motif of play and actors are relevant in this quote, because Hamlet has the actors play out a similar death of his father.
In Hamlet you can see the very obvious conspiracy of revenge between Hamlet and his uncle, Hamlet almost gives up far into the play out of cowardliness. The innocent prince had trouble taking revenge because it’s not something easily done. “Quote from the “How do all inform against me”. Maybe Hamlet should have left it to justice or “the will of god”.
In Hamlet, Shakespeare reveals that revenge is a cruel and an unsuccessful thing to do. Revenge isn’t the solution to our problems. The ghost of old Hamlet declares his son to repay his death by killing Claudius because he took his wife, the throne, and his life, but to not harm Queen Gertrude. This quote, “O, horrible! O, horrible!
Not all people respond with hate and revenge, some people let themselves get walked over but not hamlet. Hamlet does not respond to injustice too kindly. He wants revenge for his father's death, wants to set things right, help out whoever is in charge of people receiving karma by taking things into his own hands. His main goal in the novel is to seek revenge on his father's death, this started when he was visited by the ghost of the old king. The ghost said to him “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” the ghost of the old king wanted Hamlet to seek revenge on claudius for his ‘unnatural” murder of the kind.
In this passage from the play, Hamlet reveals that since he can’t show his emotions and take action, he plans to have the actors perform a play that is similar to his father’s murder to entice a reaction from Claudius to determine if he is in fact the murderer. This clever plan of Hamlet allows it to be known just how intelligent he really is. But this plan also allows a view on yet another theme in the play, revenge. Revenge is a major key in Hamlet simply because a great amount of the plot is based on vengeance. In this particular portion, Hamlet is planning how to reveal Claudius so he can partake in revenge.
The reader's beliefs of revenge are re-assessed following Hamlets meeting with the ghost of King Hamlet. In Act One scene five, Hamlet states “ o villain, villain, smiling damned villain.” The
At the beginning of the play the ghost makes his first appearance to explain to his son why to seek revenge. ¨So art thou, to revenge, when thou shalt hear¨ (I. iv.12). King Hamlet tells Hamlet to seek revenge for his death and proceeds to tell him why. By appearing to Hamlet his father sparks a fire in Hamlet to kill King Claudius and revenge his father. As the play comes to an end Hamlet finally succeeds in getting his revenge against King Claudius.
Revenge can be defined as an action done to harm others for something bad they did. Revenge is a feeling that not only affects the people who hate each other, but also those who aren’t directly involved. In the play “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, written by William Shakespeare, the topic of revenge and family rivalry is mentioned throughout the entire story. The play portrays different aspects of revenge through the use of two characters, which in this case are Romeo and Tybalt. As we know, revenge is a feeling that can lead a person to commit acts that they wouldn’t typically do if they were conscious of their actions.
The first act of Hamlet sets the stage for the rest of the play’s idea of revenge. King Hamlet’s ghost initiates a sequence of events that lead to the death of his murderer, Claudius. King Hamlet’s specter immediately tells Hamlet to “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder;” however, Hamlet does not know if the ghost is real (I.v.14). One of the most fascinating parts about King Hamlet’s plan is that he instructs Hamlet to “leave [Gertrude] to heaven and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge to prick and sting her” (I.v.93). Hamlet is to kill Claudius but not take any action against his mother.
The play of Hamlet by William Shakespeare is full of many acts of betrayal. One such of these acts is when Hamlet goes against the wishes of his father’s ghost and debates on whether or not he should kill Claudius. Not only this but he also is extremely cruel to his mother and hurts her feelings which were also against the wishes of the ghost. He wanted Hamlet to avenge his death without hurting others along the way and almost everything Hamlet did in the play went against that.
Have you ever been wronged by someone so badly that you felt as though revenge was needed? Perhaps your best friend stole the woman you loved, so you felt that you needed to act and do something to get back at him. Maybe you destroy his life by starting a false rumor about him, or you get in a fight with him and humiliate him. This is just one common example of “revenge” in our everyday lives. In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, there are much more serious things going on, involving death, murder, and wars between nations.
When Hamlet was talking with his mother,he heard a voice and killed it with his sword. He thought this voice was King Claudius but it was Laertes’ father,Polonius. After Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius, Laertes' father, Laertes seeks vengeance and plots together with Claudius to bring about the death of Hamlet in a fixed sword fight. Not only that, but Laertes also seeks to avenge his sister’s death as well.
Laertes returns to Denmark upon hearing the news of his father’s death, and straight away threatens to kill Claudius unless he gets answers. At the time, threatening a king was a capital punishment, which shows the extent Laertes is willing to go to get his revenge. Even after Claudius explains everything to Laertes, Laertes still wants his revenge and would like to kill Hamlet. Hamlet and Laertes were pretty close, so this once again shows how far Laertes is willing to go to enact his revenge, which is borderline mad. Finally, upon hearing the news of Ophelia’s death, Laertes is once again filled rage.
Revenge is arguably the most prominent theme in Hamlet. The essence of the play practically revolves around it. The beginning of the play, however, contains the themes of sorrow and anger because of Hamlet Sr 's death and Hamlet’s mother’s rash wedding with his Uncle Claudius. The spirit of Hamlet Sr. first presents the theme of revenge during his second appearance. He presents the secondary themes of death and an afterlife as well when he tells his son the following “And for the day confined to fast in fires, / Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature / are burnt and purged away’’(1.5.15-17).
